My AOL is installed as an imap server. This has to do only with receiving mail. The setup is: imap.aol.com, port 143.
As for sending, AOL has used, for years, smtp.aol.com, port 587 (authenticated). This is an annoying process, used by other ISPs, like comcast, which is supposed to reduce spam sent by their users, but it does nothing to prevent the reception of spam from outside. It is a ridiculous method, which has inconvenienced many users. This has led me to my breaking away from AOL.
I have Cox, which, at least here, does not require authentication, but has strong spam controls. I receive only a few spam messages, with five addresses, per month. Hundreds are sent, but they are blocked at the server level.
