Email Kept on Server in NS7

Postby humpd » Fri 15 Nov, 2002 11:48 pm

Is there a way to have NS7 mail read email while the email is still on the server? I know some email clients have this feature. It is much safer this way, I think, especially since as soon as I click on "get mail," it downloads to my computer along with any virus attached and I have to hope the AV I have catches it. I use a DSL connection with Ameritech.net.

Hello humpd,
You can keep a copy of mail in the server, however this is usually not recommended.
From Netscape 7 Mail: Edit | News & Newsgroup Account Settings | (under your mail account) Server Settings | (tick) Leave messages on server

However I don't think this way would be any safer, if the mail is infected, you still download a copy of it to your computer. I would suggest you update your virus definitions frequently. NAV works for me and does catch quite a few warms and virus during email downloadings.

Email kept on server in NS7

Postby humpd » Sat 16 Nov, 2002 10:31 am

Thanks for responding. I DO keep my virus patterns updated. I use PC-Cillin and it catches at least one virus (usually the Klez worm) almost every day. The problem is that it supposedly quaranteens the viurs but lets the klez generated mail through so I have to delete the message myself. I always worry that somehow the virus gets through to my computer this way. I am probably being paranoid about this but after one hard drive re-format due to the Klez when I was using a different AV, I'd rather be save than sorry.

As far as I know viruses are not triggered by just being on a message which has not been opened. In fact. I know so, because Klez was sent, messages were downloaded, even opened in one case. There was an attachment which was not downloaded, and proved to be a Klez variant (sent to an AV company for ID). It is as important to keep your virus definitions up-to-date as to apply Windows critical updates. It is also very important to have some outside help. I used for a while MailWasher, which is mainly for catching Spam, but it can detect viruses, as well as ePrompter. All I need are the headers, and I want to be able to decide what I want to keep, and I would not like an AV program which decides for me. From what I read, you seem to have no confidence in yourability to spot a virus, and decide that you do not want a message. As a rule of thumb, I do not open mail which contains attachments.
Otherwise, I do not know of any mail client who allows mail to be left on the server, and, have it do all the dirty work. Some ISP have virus scanning, but a message the one you mentioned above would also go through. But, I will check on your concerns, and get back to you, if I find anything.

I have this link for your enlightenment: http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=351
Let meknow if you are having problems getting it. It is all about Klez and Bugbear..

Email on server

Postby humpd » Sat 16 Nov, 2002 2:04 pm

Thanks all for your replies. I guess I'll just have to rely on my anti virus and hope for the best. I do not download any file attachments from someone I do not know and my wife and I try to be careful but we both get alot of email and sometimes we can make a mistake. Just the other day, I ran the Panda free online "active scan" and it caught 5 viruses (3 of which were Klez) and I use PC-Cillin 2000 which updates virus patterns every day and is in active protection mode at all times. Maybe I just need a new antivirus.

We are safe

Postby Antony » Sat 16 Nov, 2002 5:30 pm

About the virus in email attachements, we are safe. (At least safer than Outlook users)

Netscape is not affected by I Love You and Mailissa at all. Why those virus basically uses micros and worms, and what they need to do is to have a virus-friendly mail clinic to help them, such as Outlook (Express) supporting VBscript, ActiveX etc.

If all that you want to do is check the header info and delete unwanted email, you might find this of interest:

JBMAIL

Thanks for the tip on JBMail. I will look into purchasing this software or at least trying the trial version.
