Embedded Music from Canadian site

Postby Fulvio » Fri 29 Nov, 2002 1:39 pm

I don't think that any of our Canadian members would need to listen to CBC radio, on the computer, but the reception is not good enough to make it in the middle of the US, so I don't have much choice. The website is:
http://www.cbc.ca/audio.html I like to listen Radio Two, and I have a choice of listening with the embedded Real Player, or Quicktime, or Windows Media.
The later was available embedded for long time, though the other two formats could be listened to with the external players. Real Player was ok, but volume had to cranked up to be heard, Quicktime had been pathetic since last year, Windows Media was excellent. In the past month or so, all three formats have been embedded. Quicktime music is now quite good, voice is so-so, but though I can get Windows Media in 4.8, it is as dead as a doornail in NS7.0. It was working fine before, since I make sure that I have all the plugins. Is anyone Canadian or not willing to try? I avoid using Windows Media as an external player, and I do ok with Music Match.
Any comments appreciated. And, for anyone curious as to my interest in the CBC, I lived for long periods of time near the Canadian border.

Real One Player, version 6, works fine with me under Netscape 7. In fact Real One was the most reliable one of the three players. Windows Media worked OK (I have Media player 7.01). QuickTime (version 5) came up but could never receive any data.

I run Win98SE and am located in Ohio if that matters.

Real One was a royal pain to install and prevent from messing up my system. I had to stop some sort of initialization file (evntsvc.exe) that would consume 100% of my CPU time for several minutes every time I booted the system up. Real One resets that file to turn on again every time it accesses the Internet. Installation of Real One seemed to change the Sun Java settings, too. I persisted because my RIO mp3 player insisted it was needed. I decided not to install it on the other two systems that I use.

I listen to CBC Radio One online. Just FYI, in the morning, the programming is really good. Sorry, my American friends... our radio is better! 8)
This is probably a bit too local for you though...

I actually have it bookmarked:

Hi Fulvio,

I'm still using "Ye Old RealPlayer Basic 8" and I am listening to your station as I type. It does, however, cut out when I browse from page to page. Otherwise the quality is good, the volume control is on the halfway mark, so I think that's fair performance.

You do not have to tell me that the programming is better, that's why I am concerned about the quality of sound. I have been exposed to Canadian radio for years. The reason why I want something different, is that I want to be able to get good sound through my stereo, and it works, consistently but not too well with Real One. Windows Media sounded best, but Quicktime is not too bad. This applies only to my capturing the sound to be listened to, away from the computer. I guess I am too fussy. But, thank to you all.
