Error in shell.32.exe

Postby yankee1620 » Tue 25 Nov, 2003 9:48 am

NS 4.79
Every time I click on the *sent* folder I get the message...NS has caused an error in shell32.exe. NS will now close.
I have restarted the computer three times but still get the error.
Consequently I am unable to even delete the messages in the *sent* folder.
This message appears fairly frequently but it has never persisted like this. Usually restarting the computer fixes it, but not now.
What can I do to fix the problem??

There are no viruses or spyware on my computer....

TIA for help.....

I suggest that you do a Search for Netscape shell32.exe error.
Anyway try to delete the shell32.exe file, but keep it in a safe place, so that you can put it back in, if needed. And, see if it works.
I have one copy from the year 2002, v.4.72.

I have no idea what shell32.exe is or how I would know if I need it or not. Are you saying search google for it????

In the meantime, I will just use a different browser for mail if this shell32 is a permanent error that cannot be fixed...

Thanks for your response...you know what that file is, but I don't have any idea what it is or whether it is essential or not...

I have no idea what that file is for. I do not have it, and a number of people suggested that it be deleted, so it may not be so vital. But that's why I suggested that you delete it, or actually move it into a safe location, so that you can put it back, if necessary. I dug out some link to be checked: http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/bulletins/i-085.shtml in Google.
This should more or less do. There are a good hundred or more posts, many in Japanese, but a lot of them talking about a trojan which may have have caused problems. Do you have an updated antivirus program, as well an antiadware, such as Spybot S&S or Adaware?

Thanks...

I run Norton AV, AdAware and Spybot every day and they are all up to date...

The only Spyware that is ever found is Alexa that Microsoft often dumps on computers when downloading from Windows Update, and I always delete it....

Have you tried to to delete the shell32.exe, then? If you don't know what it is for, do a Find/Files or Folders, or whatever you call in WinMe, which you appear to have. The file should be in Windows|System, right click and look at Properties|Version. It should say there what it is for. If you cannot make any sense, I may try to help. But, basically, I was suggesting that you delete or cut/paste in a safe location, so that you can return it to its proper place, if something goes wrong. This is as far as I am going to go. There is no report in my Google or other search engine search which associate, specifically, a problem with Netscape.
Since, you have Norton, I would suggest that you disable scanning Netscape, if it is set that way. It is completely unenecessary to have Netscape scanned and Norton is particularly bad because it changes the identification of the account, taking its own. That's enough to screw up anything.
How is your 7.01 mail? Set up the same way as 4.79?

I did a search for shell32.exe on my computer and it came up empty. However I found it in the registry and deleted it. Why it wasn't located in *search* I don't know. And if it is a trojan, I don't know why it wasn't picked up by NAV2003.
I deleted it from the registry anyway and created a restore point before the deletion.

Any description that I was able to find calls it a trojan that is used to send spam from the infected computer...deletion was recommended and the operator was cautioned NOT to confuse it with shell32.dll.

I only use 7.01 as my default browser...it is the standalone streamline...I don't have it set up fr mail. I have it set up for mail on my other computer (Win98 SE) but did not like it as well as 4.79 or 4.8. Too many problems with mail that I don't want to get involved with right now.

Thank you very much for your responses and help!

Congratulations, and good riddance.
NAV, by the way, does not necessarily handles trojans which are otherwise labelled spyware. That's why it is essential to have an anti-spyware program. Adaware 6, and I am sure Spybot S&D would have found the refistry item.
It is possible that the file was deleted, but that is not enough to clean everything up.

I run AdAware and Spybot S&D every day and NAV 2003 every day also...
Spybot constantly updates and does a very good job...
It is annoying when MS always denies dumping Alexa on computers when it says MS right on it and it appears right after running Windows Update.
