EU prepares to kick Microsoft's butt . . . !

Postby DJGM » Wed 06 Aug, 2003 5:52 am

BBC News article . . .

EU 'gives last chance' to Microsoft.

The European Commission has said it is giving Microsoft a last
chance to comment before it takes action against what it called
the company's continuing abuse of its dominant market position.

More details (courtesy of BBC News Online) here . . .

Hopefully, Microsoft will get a far bigger punishment than the pathetic slap on the wrist they got from the US DoJ . . .

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Microsoft's punishment should be along the lines of . . .

Removing the web intergration from Windows, and the option of removing the media player from Windows.

Also, a few billion dollars in fines to companies like Novell, Apple, RealNetworks etc would be good too :-)

The EU should force Microsoft to issue a Windows Service Pack that will have all
the "optionalization" that'll be made available with the forthcoming XP/2000Lite.

Plus, if Microsoft continue to insist, on bundling Internet Exploiter with Windows,
the EU penpushers should insist that MS also bundles Mozilla, and to make sure
that it gets an equally prominent position within the Windows interface as IE!

This is alongside compulsory huge financial penalties worth billions of . . . €uros!

In all seriousness, Microsoft should not have to not bundle IE or WMP with Windows, but OEMs and users alike, should be able to remove these programs (not OS components!) and replace them with others like Quicktime and Mozilla.

Several billion Euros in fines to it's competitors sounds reasonable too. I'd think Real Networks, Apple, Novell, Sun Microsystems and a some others.

With regards to the huge financial damages that the US DoJ failed to make the evil empire pay
to Netscape, the EU should force MS to pay these to the recently founded Mozilla Foundation,
as a very hefty donation, seeing as this organization is now effectively overseeing the future
end user releases of Mozilla, picking up from where the sacked Netscape developers left off.

Microsoft has enough money . . . Netscape's sales were around $US 600 million in 97', that much to the Mozilla Foundation would do nicely . . . !

If Bill Gates was willing to give me a billion dollars, I might actually consider using IE!
