Ever feel your PC is too slow?

Postby Mandrake » Wed 17 Mar, 2010 12:38 pm

I can guarantee that these results of Intel's new flagship enthusiast CPU will make anyone feel that their current system is far too slow!

The specifications of this CPU are pretty insane, six cores (twelve threads with Hyper Threading), 12MB shared L3 cache and a 3.33GHz clock speed (up to 3.6GHz with Turbo Boost) at a crazy $999 USD. The good news is they'll slot right into a current X58 motherboard as long as you update the BIOS.

My good friend is going to buy a six core machine as soon as it is available.
He has one application for this machine: crunching for World Community Grid.

Where did you find it for 999USD? The lowest I've been able to find it is 1139USD.

I'm thinking about getting a new computer, probably just a new dual core Pentium machine, which might be upgraded to a Core 2 Quad.

John-

How much do you want to spend? At this point, you should try for a quad or an i5.

My new biggie is an i7-920, hyper-threaded quad, but I could pretty much spend whatever I wanted.

The new laptop with an i5-520M was US$1000, the top of my budget for this machine which I did not need to buy. And I wasted US$110 for a video card that I did not realize I did not need. So you should be able to do better if it is a desktop.

Rumours say that the next Mac Pro will feature Intel's six-core CPUs. And I am overdue for upgrading this iMac.

Apple's next upgrades have been a lot easier to work out ever since they switched to Intel CPUs. Intel's CPU roadmap is out in the open, after all. :)

$999 is Intel's price. Since it's new technology sites like Newegg will charge a premium at first.

The Core 2 architecture is outdated now. You would be better off with the new Core i3 and i5 platform or the AMD AM3 platform instead. Hell, AMD has quad core CPUs starting at $99 USD.

There is one thing for sure, DO NOT get the new Pentium G6950 (based on the new Clarksdale/i# arch).

I'm the exception, not the rule. Remember that, and you'll be all right.
