F-Secure versus McAfee

Postby James » Fri 11 Sep, 2009 8:18 pm

We currently have McAfee Int. Sec. Suite on our computers. Our ISP offers for free, the F-Secure Int. Security Suite (and it appears to be a good one). Below are two links to tests recently done. If you have time, check them out. It seems to me that installing F-Secure would be a better way to go but I'm not entirely convinced. What do you think?

The first half of the first YouTube clip on installation seem to be a bit boring. However, it seems like F-Secure software is pretty good.

Can't you have both anti-virus installed? or have one machine on F-Secure and another one on McAfee?

I don't use F-Secure or McAfee, I use the AVG free on Windows XP under Parallels Desktop for Mac.

As for the Mac itself, I now use Intego's VirusBarrier X5, bought through promotion of MacUpdatePromo.
Intego has a history of over-exaggerating some 'proof-of-concept' virus. I wouldn't have bought it hadn't it been on some nice discount. (We have previously mentioned [sdt=10878]Intego's dirty tactic on making publicity[/sdt].)

No. Having two anti-virus products installed on the same system can cause problems, as they both have
"real-time" protection constantly running in the background. Having more than the one background AV
engine run at the same time as any other can cause them to conflict with each other, and this in turn
could result in system instability and other annoying problems. One AV at a time is best practice.

As for McAfee, I usually recommend people steer well clear of that, and the equivalent Norton branded
products from Symantec, as they both have a history between of becoming more and more bloated
and unreliable with each release. AVG is OK, but that's getting almost as bad since v8.0 . . .

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I have been using AVG for several years, after a short period with McAfee, which drove me crazy. My ISP offers McAfee, and, since AVG seemed to get slower and slower with its scanning time, I tried McAfee, and found it slower.
I am in complete agreement with DJGM about not using the two major antivirus program (in the US, at least). I would give F-Secure a shot. It is a major nuisance to fiddle around with more than one AV, but, these days, it is nor necessary to uninstall one program, plus cleaning up the entire computer of any traces of the discarded program.

I guess people can test out the anti-virus under virtual machines like the guys in YouTube did.
