It depends on the model and the software I believe.

I just read the user guide of my Brother MFC-240C, it says the included PC-FAX software does allow receiving FAX on computers. However it is not on my model.

(I use my Brother MFC-240C as a standalone fax machine, I know I am old fashioned.)

My computer is 6 years old its a hp pavilion a720n i have fax i can send recieve and it stores a copy of the fax recieved to a folder in my computer. my friend has a gateway desk top computer and a all in one scanner fax and copier when he gets a fax it prints it out but will not store it on his computer. If his printer is out of ink he loses the fax and has to have it sent again. Where my fax is on my computer so i don't lose a fax.

It sounds like you are using the Fax feature that is in Windows with your modem. I thought you were enquiring about getting an all-in-one fax scanner printer.

I have no idea about the all-in-one machine your friend has.
With my case (that's Brother MFC-240C) when the ink runs out (which happens a few times), the incoming fax simply stores in the printer's memory, until I replace the ink cartridge. Then it prints out.
