Filename order in Mac OS

I wanted to use a filename starting character with an ASCII code larger than that for z, to put a file at the end of a file listing and keep it there, so tried to use a tilde, then a pipe symbol when the tilde failed to do it. A filename beginning with those symbols is listed first, not last. Why? Tilde has a code of 7E, and pipe is 7C, while lower case z is 7A. Does Mac OS not list names in ASCII order?

I believe most modern OSes no longer sort based on ASCII scancodes, and instead go in blocks - symbols, numbers, then letters. This is so that when you sort letters, the case doesn't matter - A and a will both sort before B.

You could always try experimenting with non-printing characters as well, such as scan code 255, which would logically come last if it is organized in such a way.

It would appear so, but someone pointed me to an article which stated that certain Greek letter symbols and the apple symbol will sort to the end, so I used the apple symbol. Apparently Mac OS sorts by Unicode rather than ASCII.
