Filter keys?

Postby Fulvio » Sun 26 Feb, 2006 6:55 pm

It was about 2AM a couple of nights ago, and I was trying to post a message. I needed some additional information, after having entered one capital letter. I guess a kept the shift key down for more than eight second, and a window came up, reading my rights about filter keys. I thought was I indicated that I did not want them, but who knows?
I have no clue as to what is the purpose of setting filter keys, whatever they are, but the effect is profound. For instance, since the last typed letter was capitalyzed, all others stayed that way. Later, when I tried to play around with the settings, I could not type at all.
Anyway, I was able to fumble my way out of it, and, I see only one lasting effect. Prior to that debable, I was able to select Start|My Computer| Drive C, or whichever drive I want to check, and open its contents. Now when I click on Drive C, the Search Windows pops up. If I right click|open the selected drive, I can get to the contents, as well as by selecting the drive from the drop down, from My Computer to Search.
At this point, I may have made enough changes that I am no longer anywhere near square one.
I can live with this, but I don't understand why I should go from clicking on a drive to a search, which I don't even want. anything to change, in order to get from My Computer|Drive C|contents of drive C, instead of
My Computer|Drive C|Search?

You can turn off Filter Keys by clearing its checkbox in Control Panel -> Accessibility Options. I believe it's activated by pressing the Shift key for eight seconds. Its purpose is to prevent you from repeating keystrokes if you didn't mean to.

You can turn off the eight-second Shift key rule in Filter Keys' Settings box.

Don,
what you suggest is the first thing I tried (I had an icon in the Task Manager). I think that the effect is much more profound that what is said.
For instance, after my mishap, I could not type anything in Start|Run.
And, what I noticed before, i.e. that I cannot directly open the contents of the C drive, may be a coincidence, but I cannot do Start|My computer (or just My Computer)|C drive, and open the contents. I never used to have Search coming up before.

I should have been happy with the above inconvenience. Now, I went to the
Accessibility Wizard, and, it made a mess. I did not even select anything, and the top blue bar ( I keep the Quick Launch, with STart and Clock at the bottom), the one with X, is now half the size of what it used to be, while the letters in the toolbar are larger. I am giving up! The best way to do things is to leave them alone. The problem is that I don't get a chance to see what the results are. However, should I want to delete a .tmp file connected to some unidentified program, I can't do it.
