I, never, ran into as many problems, as this time.
I tried, as usual, the incremental update. I worked, closed Firefox, and nothing happened. I went to the system manager, and deleted the firefox.exe, which was still present. Only then, the updater.exe showed up, but it, quickly disappeared. At one time, Firefox loaded with the wrong profile. I had been using two profiles, and enter into the Target line, the desired profile, like this:
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p default1
, but it opened with default2, which had not been entered. It took long time, which included my deleting two firefox.exe lines in the system manager. Finally, now, after nearly one hour, I have been able to open Firefox as desired.
I have no idea what is going on. My computer seems to have problems running too many tasks, at once. There was a windows update, with a single update, which did not complete after one hour.
My AntiVirus scan, which I do, daily, is still chugging along, after nearly three hours. A scan takes about one hour and twenty minutes.
We will see, later, what happens, especially since Zone Alarm Firewall did not ask me to allow the new Firefox update.

All I ever do is click on Help, Update and Firefox does its thing. They've made it as easy as that so anyone (including my 75 yr old sister) could do it without any hassle. :) As for running my anti-virus, it is set to run when the computer is idle, (one of Norton's better ideas). So, when I head into the next room to watch a movie with my wife, my anti-virus does its thing.

From 3.6.4 Release Notes,
What’s New in Firefox 3.6.4

Firefox 3.6.4 provides uninterrupted browsing for Windows and Linux users when there is a crash in the Adobe Flash, Apple Quicktime or Microsoft Silverlight plugins.

If a plugin crashes or freezes, it will not affect the rest of Firefox. You will be able to reload the page to restart the plugin and try again.

It is a great new feature (to Firefox). Recall from our memory, Apple implemented this 'crash resistance' feature keeping the browser intact when plug-in like Flash player crashes in Apple Safari 4, released in June 2009.

I had been running the branch build. When I found out that the official release was out, I downloaded the Mac .dmg file and installed it manually (as I always do). It is fine.
I really do not like things updating themselves, so I do not allow them to do that.

I understand about hesitation surrounding things updating themselves, but in all the years that Firefox has offered to update itself, I've never had a single (note: a "single") problem. As I mentioned before... it's the easiest thing in the world to click Help, Update and let it do its thing.

I have read literally hundreds of messages from others complaining that Firefox just updated itself and now the bookmarks are missing, or the extensions do not work, or the whole profile is missing or severely damaged. I have never had that problem myself, but I have never allowed Firefox to update itself either.
If something in the profile is being written when the update happens, it can get corrupted. If the application itself is not running while the new version is being installed, the profile will not be affected in that manner.

Yeah... I've read the same things and have scratched my head wondering exactly what mess their computers were already in to result in these messes. I've never had a corrupt profile either so it's all a mystery to me.
