Firefox 40 hijacks Cortana (Windows 10)

Postby Antony » Sat 15 Aug, 2015 11:56 am

I haven't jumped to Windows 10 myself, but this sounds interesting...
So, if you rushed to install Windows 10, and Mozilla's latest Firefox 40 was pushed to your computer (by default), and you happen to live in a country that Cortana understands you... Firefox 40 will automatically re-route queries that Cortana sends to Microsoft's Bing to whatever your default search engine is.

Thanks god, this default setting can be opt-out.

Is this a big deal? Probably not, but it was known that browser company and search engines hadcommercial agreements that browser makers earn commissions by sending search queries through built-in search bar. (At least this was the case in the past.)

I use DuckDuckGo for search. They don't track you. It is an available option in Firefox (where Yahoo is the default now), it was simple to change.

They also have a DuckDuckGo (open source) Android app which includes a built-in web browser. iPhone app is here.

I use Bing for two reasons: 1) I could care less about being tracked by the search engine and in fact I "want" relevant ads displayed rather than things that are meaningless to me. I think we make way more of this privacy thing and in particular of an ad-free environment than in necessary and in the end, good for the internet 2) for every 475 searching points I achieve a $5 Amazon gift card. So far I have received over $250 in Amazon gift cards and my wife has made approximately $475... just for using MS's search engine which we want to do anyway. In other words, between the two of us we've brought in about $700 and that takes us about five minutes of searching per day.

Not a bad deal there. I noticed something similar on Bing but wasn't sure what that was. All for doing nothing but searches.

That $750 could buy two PC's.

I'm also in the middle of installing Google Chrome on Linux. Isn't the easiest thing to do, but it's doable.

I thought they provided RPM/DEB packages for distributions? I

I, just, saw this thread. I am a Seamonkey user, and I had Bing, for years, in XP. I, never, got anything out of it.
Google seems to be default in my new Win10,, and Bing is not even one of the choices, although Duck Duck Go is.
