What kind of "time out" message? Webpages too slow to load?

The bottom left hand side will read: " Connecting to www.MSN.com (example)
Then after waiting a while it will pop up a message which reads" "THE OPERATION TIMED OUT WHEN ATTEMPTING TO CONNECT TO WWW.MSN.COM".

but if i by pass the firewall it will connect very fast to the internet.

Does that happen to all websites or just a few?

It might be that a few contents from msn.com get blocked by your firewall, or contents from third party (advertising agent) being blocked.
You might need to reduce the security level of your firewall.

It does this for all websites. It will only access them if the Firewall is off. I also have Mozilla 1.6, which is really good. It can access all sites with no problems, and without me having to undo the firewall. Also the firefox browser had no "back" and "forward" arrows, and when i chose the "Customize " option on the toolbar, there were no Arrows to select to put on the toolbar. I had netscape and changed to Mozilla 1.6. with both Netscape and Mozilla i've had no problems accessing sites.

Thank's

Does your firewall programme allow Firefox to access the net?

I checked the firewall, and you are right, it was blocking access to Firefox. This corrected the problem, but the "Back and Forward" arrows are nowhere to be found. I think I'll stick with 1.6, It works just fine for me. Plus firefox to me looks like IE.

Thank's for your help..

Not all websites allows you to use "back and forward" feature.
Also, make sure you allow your Firefox to have some diskspace for cache and history. (both a writable directory from OS and enabling it in Firefox)

The appearance means nothing, since there are many skins around to change its looks. It surely does not behave like IE.
But, remember that Firefox has no mail, although it can be easily linked to a mail client.
It is the most customizable browser around, but you have to work on it a bit.
What kind of Firewall do you have? My Zone Alarm asks me what I want to do. That's why I can't access IE!

antony, by back and forward i mean that the browser has no Back and forward arrows available on the toolbar. Not even when i go to "customize" to add other icons on the toolbar. there is not an "arrow" to be found anywhere.

Fulvio, the firewall is sygate. I like it. Just gotta learn to work with it.

The arrows are supposed to be in the navigation toolbar, beneathe File.
Do you mean that the space is blank? They will be grayed out until they are needed. Is this the Firefox from the mozilla website. I can think of only one reason, i.e. that you had some Firebird, in the past. If one uses the same profile as with Firebird, with no precautions taken, strange things can happen. I did not create a new profile, but I had to disable all extentions. Everything has been working fine for me.
As for Sygate, I used it twice when my Zone Alarm had gone on strike. I thought that it would alert you of a new application trying to access the Internet, but if there is a display problem, Sygate may have gotten confused.

You don't have a tool bar? Do you use default skin (theme)?

Otherwise try Alt + left/right arrow key in Windows
or :cmd: + left/right arrow key in Mac.

DiscoFever lost his navigation buttons when he installed an incompatible theme.
