Firefox to use Microsoft Bing as default search engine?

Postby Antony » Thu 27 Oct, 2011 7:30 am

We all know the power of default setting, Mozilla has been exploiting the power of default setting to push (unaware) users to rush for the latest whatsoever version Mozilla deems.

Few years back when Mozilla and Yahoo! agreed to use Yahoo! as default search engine in certain markets, there were strong complaints. That issue reaffirmed one thing: Google was one of the very few big companies loved/endorsed by open-source extremists.

It is well known that Mozilla's multi-million dollar lucrative contract with Google is about for renewal, and the open-source browser developer has been working on a browser that uses rival Microsoft's Bing as default search engine.

The customised version of Firefox - Firefox with Bing - can be downloaded from firefoxwithbing.com.

And to keep those who can't live without latest of whatsoever a peace of mind, Firefox with Bing uses the latest Firefox version.

Unsurprisingly, Mozilla has been careful on wording about this issue.

Actually... Bing is pretty cool. My wife already has been given a $25 gift certificate from Amazon by cashing in just some of her reward points from Bing. She has enough for a second but is saving them up for something else. I've been using Bing for over a year now and frankly I like it better than Google. I see this as a good thing. Google has gotten far too aggressive over the years and isn't the company it started out to be.

Bing is cool, but try to get it to work in Seamonkey! I got it installed, from mycroft.com, but chose not to make default. It is listed, but I cannot get it in the choice of Search engines to use.

I haven't been using Bing much because of the default search being Google. I think I shall give Bing a bit more use, perhaps starting with iPad.

Just remember to enroll in the Bing Rewards program. I already have 300+ credits for simply using it to search.

I found out that if I move up Bing to the top of the list, it will become available in the Default Search Engine list.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I must have figured out how to make Bing default, because it is in my Seamonkey.
Bing is ok. As long as there is choice, I don't mind it. There are some choice which would require a search to find out what it is. Pardon my ignorance.
