First impressions...

Postby sisyphus88 » Fri 13 Dec, 2002 3:31 pm

7.01 installed fine.

First problem is that the search button defaults to netscape's website and uses Lycos as the search engine even though I have Google set as my default search engine. The search button to default to the selected default engine's website.

Second, I don't think NS should allow RealPlayer to reconfigure... I have to go back and set it up again.

Seems to run well, so far.

To my understanding, there's some business issue there. (Search engine companies paid Netscape have have their "Search" button to use their engines for 20% or so)

Well, they have to in order to Netscape Radio to work.

sisyphus,

Add these lines to your user.js file and it will let you access Google via the Netscape throbber in the upper right corner of the screen:

// throbber
user_pref("browser.throbber.url","http://www.google.com");
user_pref("messenger.throbber.url","http://www.google.com");
user_pref("compose.throbber.url","http://www.google.com");
user_pref("addressbook.throbber.url","http://www.google.com");

Ramona, what is the first item in the list, for? And, do you need all the lines. Just curious.
I have for heck of it, Google in my toolbar, with a nice blue G. So, I can open it in 4.8, which is still my default browser. 8)

Do you really need to? I copy my entire plugins folder in some cases from one browser to another. As long as all the files are there, Netscape Radio should work, but it may need some special tickling. I prefer to use the Plus version outside Netscape.
I have the feeling that this reconfiguring is done by the same people who devised the way to find AOL's mode of connection, or uninstalling old versions. It has to go through the motions, although I could do it a lot faster.

Fulvio,
I believe that Netscape Radio needs to make sure that files handled by the RealPlayer correctly.
I believe Netscape 7 is still shipping with RealPlayer 8.

Another, Netscape 7 will automatically try to find all plug-ins, even though you do not install them for Netscape 7. The one installed for Communicator and Netscape 6 (their folders) will automatically work for Netscape 7.

I would not know what is with NS7, but there was no choice to do a custom install , avoiding Real Player. There is some signal which tells the program to look for files, which configuring. I do not even know if you can get RP8 at real.com.

Hi Fulvio,

It's not needed, I copied it from my user.js file, which is organized in categories. The "//" plus a space comments out the line.

At the bottom of my SHOW'N TELL page you can see how I have the file set up.

I finally see it! User.js=Pref.js in 7.0. This has been confusing me, once a week, but never stopped me.
