My Core i7 920 is basically my 'everything machine' now. I had considered getting a small notebook, but owning a smartphone has somewhat negated the need for a notebook.
My Core i7 will serve my needs for at least another year. There's a lot of overclocking headroom in that thing as well, if I need it. My next upgrade will in all likelihood be to an SSD of some sort. I've got a pair of 74GB Western Digital Raptor drives running in a RAID array (striped) at the present, but a single SSD would be much faster than that setup.
