Hey John-

I did say somewhere on one thread or another that i had bought a new machine with an i7-840QM. I may not have been any more clear than that. If that is the case, I apologize.

I had this perfect spot in the Digiteria, being taken up by a netbook. Every time I got out of my chair to leave the room, would see this spot and say, "Gee, I really could do something here, add some more crunching. So, it is a Dell Studio 17, Win 7 Home Premium. It is a hyper threaded quad.I put nothing on it save Firefox and BOINC 6.10.43, So far, a WCG profile which runs everything and opts in on new projects, but not betas. There are a couple of interesting new projects running BOINC, so I am going to add them and Rosetta.

So, I am now up to 24 threads, 1.75gig to 2.5 gig, but some turbo to 3.XX.

But, the first place I came was to SillyDog, the best darned forum on the planet. Hey, it's peopled by guys like you and me, and the occasional RedSox fan.

Thank you Richard, I am honoured.

I am sure you will love your i7 machine. (I still don't have any Core-i series machines.)

Just curious, exactly, how many laptops do you have in use?

What's the i7-840QM's stock frequency? Just wondering.

And currently the only machine I have crunching is my Core 2 Duo. Better than nothing. :)

Antony-

I have a 17" Dell XPS M1710 Vista Core 2 Duo for work, a Dell Studi 14 (14") i5-520M hyper threaded dual core for travel, and now the Dell Studio 17 (you guessed it) i7-840QM hyper threaded quad.

John - I think 1.73gig. My Core 2 duos are 2.0 gig and 2.5 gig. so, spped these days is not all in CPU clock speed. The L1 and L2 cache are larger and faster today. We have DDR3- 1333 DRAM. All sorts of stuff, beyond CPU clock speed.

Someone told me this i7-840QM is the top of Intel's consumer laptop processor line.

I only ask because I love The Sims 3, and even on a powerful processor like that, it will not install unless it's a 2.0Ghz CPU. There are ways of bypassing it, though. It's like a bug or something in the installer.

Quad core CPU in a notebook, that's very impressive. :) My Core i7 920 is basically my 'everything machine' now. I had considered getting a small notebook, but owning a smartphone has somewhat negated the need for a notebook.

You'll have something new to look forward to anyway. Intel's next generation architecture codenamed 'Sandy Bridge' is due to be released in late 2010 or early 2011. Fun times for sure. :) My Core i7 will serve my needs for at least another year. There's a lot of overclocking headroom in that thing as well, if I need it. My next upgrade will in all likelihood be to an SSD of some sort. I've got a pair of 74GB Western Digital Raptor drives running in a RAID array (striped) at the present, but a single SSD would be much faster than that setup.
