First time in 9 years I've had a problem with Netscape

Postby JeffreyLevesque » Sat 18 Mar, 2006 1:35 am

Hello Everyone,

I have searched the forum and haven't seen anyone with this problem.

I'm going to give the Reader's Digest version:

After Service Pack 2 was unwantingly installed on my old laptop, everything was so screwed up, I literally threw it in the garbage and bought a new one.

On the new one, I installed NS 7.2, reconfigured my 30+ email accounts and all was well.

Soon after, I upgraded to 8.0. I didn't know there was no Composer or POP Email. No big deal, I kept 7.2 installed for that.

One night I turned my computer completely off, which I never do and when I turned it back on, SP 2 was installed, I had lost all my email configurations. NS was unable to read the "Appliation Data" folder, which was still there.

I then re-installed NS 8.0 and 7.2 but, it didn't work. So, I figured I would upgrade to 8.1 and see if that fixed the problem. It didn't and things are worse than before.

I tried to do a system restore to 1 week before SP2 installed with no results.

My questions:

Why is NS freezing up when I open it? (freezes for a full minute or more)

and

Is there a way to remove the stinking rotten SP2 install? If not, I have seen some posts from those that say they never installed SP2. How do I prevent it from installing?

I smell a new laptop in my future because I just can't take it! It's soooo aggravating!

Thanks to anyone that can help in advance

That IS a mystery. SP2 just goes ahead and installs itself all by itself? Nine years of no problems and suddenly problems on both the old and the new computer? I have to tell you, I've also had Netscape since 1997 (so that makes nine years for me as well) and I updated to SP2 the minute it became available. I've had every incarnation of Mozilla on this latest computer and I've not experienced these problems. It seems to me that most people have updated to SP2 and while you read about problems on various forums, they represent a very small number of persons. Personally, I think you need to explore other possibilities as to why you are having these issues. Have you considered either switching over to FF 1.5.0..1 and TB 1.5 OR switching to SeaMonkey (which is essentially a more secure and updated NS 7.2)? I'm sure you would find far fewer issues with either of these combinations/suites.

I am one who never upgraded to SP2, because I had heard of problems encountered by a friend, when SP2 first came out. I don't feel that i needed, and I still don't, but I would not hesitate to install it, if I felt that I needed it.
It will be installed by itself, only, if automatic updates are turned on. It is not something which happens by itself. It is a great feature for people who don't want to be bothered with decisions, and such updates are never noticed.
I have no idea why NS would be affected. There is a Firewall which is turned on by default which may interfere. But, the firewall can be turned off from the Control Panel.
All the attempted fixes are not going to accomplish anything, although they are, it seems, the only way that they are thought to be useful.
Why? Netscapes of any type, as well as Mozilla, Firefox, and Thunderbird, are made up of at least three parts. Only the program is removed, while the personal data (profile) is not. And, mail is in the profile!
I don't have any idea what went on, and I am not about to suggest newer programs, which may or may not solve the problem, but a basic knowledge of the programs is necessary.
I would start by leaving everything in place, but just disabling the windows Firewall. I don't know if System Restore has removed SP2 or not.The second possible target is the profile.

I can't figure it out either. I had turnd on Auto Updates because I got sick of the "nagging". I will never make that mistake again!

This is twice that SP2 has killed me.

I prefer NS by FAR over IE or even Firefox, but, if the freezing continues, I have to abort the mission I guess.

Thanks for your time.
