Current Massachusetts law allows this, but each supermarket chain can only sell it in three (3) of their stores, state-wide.

The liquor stores have a monopoly when it comes to selling beer and wine, yet they don't want the competition from the supermarkets?

If someone wants wine with their dinner, they should be allowed to buy it in a supermarket.
Supermarkets can apply permission to sell liquor in New Zealand. The thing is that they must be able to lock the access to the liquor section after certain hour.

Mandrake wrote:$4.50 for a 2 litre Coca Cola is really excessive. Considering that the liquor shops just usually buy it from the supermarkets when it's cheap. They buy it for $2 or so, then put it in their fridges and charge more than double for it!
It is still cheaper then getting Coke from pub/bar. A glass of Coke is about $4.50 which is more expensive than a schooner of beer.

Pepsi Light has been advertised for a while, has any tried it?

It seems like a competition to Coke Zero.

I always end up getting (regular) Coca-Cola.

Also, a new soft drink named [sdt=12221]Enviga[/sdt] is coming, and Coca-Cola claims it burns calories. [sdt=12221]discussion thread[/sdt]

Coke Zero was devised as a way to compete with Pepsi Max. Pepsi light has been around for years as Diet Pepsi, they just renamed it a while ago. The formula was recently re-done though, it tastes a bit better now.

Check out what's selling in the States, with a weird reflective label no less...

Image

It's better than Diet Pepsi, but it's expensive. A 20-ounce bottle cost me just thirty-five cents less than a two-liter bottle of Mountain Dew.

We have the same sized bottles here (20 ounces = 600mL). They sell a 2L bottle for about $2.40 but then charge about $2.80 here for a 600mL bottle just because it's chilled! :roll:

It's odd that they market it as "Diet Pepsi Max". Is it based on the same formula as regular "Pepsi Max"?

I've noticed they've been selling the Diet Pepsi Max where I work for a few weeks now...

I didn't see a non-diet Pepsi Max while I was out, so I have no idea if it's the same formula.

Diet Pepsi Max Bottle wrote:Contains: carbonated water, caramel color, phosphoric acid, aspartame, potassium benzoate (preserves freshness), caffeine, natural flavors, acesulfame potassium, citric acid, calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor), panax ginseng extract.
[...]
Caffeine content: 46mg/8 fl oz.

Same thing?

Ingredients: Carbonated Water, Colour (150d) Sweeteners (951, 950), Food Acids (338, 330), Preservative (211), Flavours and Caffeine.

It's curious that they don't mention the caffeine amount here. No Cola seems to have that listed here, though energy drinks like Red Bull do.

Here's what some of the numbers mean:-

330 = Citric acid
338 = Phosphoric acid
221 = Sodium benzoate
150 = Caramel
950 = Acesulphane potassium
951 = Aspartame

It looks like it's the exact same formula. They're just marketing it differently to appeal to Americans, I'd guess.

It seems like they're trying to market it as an energy drink, given the "Invigorating Cola" slogan and the caffeine content. It's the first cola I've seen with the caffeine content listed outright.

Wikipedia has a statement about it...

Wikipedia wrote:Pepsi Max was introduced in the USA on June 1, 2007 as "Diet Pepsi Max." Its ingredient label mentions ginseng, and the drink is said to contain more caffeine (46mg vs. 24mg per 8 fl oz) than Diet Pepsi.

I'm kind of surprised it came out June 1st, since this week was the first time I'd seen it stocked locally.

Interesting. Here, the marketing involves the fact that the product contains no sugar - like Pepsi light and that it has "Maximum taste"; like regular Pepsi. The marketing line is "Maximum taste, no sugar."

When Coke Zero was released in Australia last year on Australia Day (26 January) the marketing was all about "Real taste, no sugar."- sound familiar? Pepsi's marketing program thereafter focused on explaining the benefits of 'maximum' over that of 'zero'.

For the hell of it, the two-liter bottle:

Not much different from the 600mL one.

new Pepsi glass bottle

I spotted the new Pepsi glass bottle in a food show yesterday.
I don't have the new bottle yet, but here's the poster.

Image

It's the same 300ml Pepsi (and Pepsi Max) with a new look. (Everything looks good when placed in front of a Mac.)

I prefer Coca-Cola to Pepsi.

What does one do when Pepsi Max is very cheap? That's obvious, you stock up on it! :)
