SillyDog701 • Fn key stuck

Anyone know how to "un-stick" the Fn key? I just replaced my keyboard on my Inspiron 2650 (I had spilled some soda in it before and it wasn't working). It works fine now, except that the Fn key seems to think it's depressed (poor lil key) so my "uio" nows looks like "456". If I hold in the Fn key I'm able to type the letters, but obviously that's a big pain. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks!

This problem does not seem to be limited to Dell laptops. I have ecperienced the same problem on two different models of Acer laptop (both running XP) and an old Tiny laptop running Windows 2000. For me the problem only occurrs when logging on with a roaming user profile. IT'S DRIVING ME MAD so some help would be gratefully received if anybody has found a solution.

Well that's the way things go! I have just managed to solve the problem I think. Try using the Fn key to turn off the number lock -- Hold down "Fn" and tap "F11". It seems number lock is on by default in some situations!

Hi. I am the owner of a brand spanking new Gateway CX200 convertable notebook. As of a couple of minutes ago, my FN key was stuck. Using the on screen keyboard, I googled the phrase: 'fn key stuck' and this thread was the first result and the only one which was relevant. My solution was not found here, but what somebody said about calling Dell reminded me that I had my user guide on hand so I was able to look up the solution in the trouble shooting section.

Since I probably will not be the only person to have this problem with this model, I am going to take a minute to explain how to fix it. It is real easy to do.

Hold down the FN key and hit the SCROLL key (found next to the F12 button).

If that doesn't fix it, you may really have a problem.

Hope this helps somebody.

I found that pressing F12 & the Num lock / Scroll lock key beside it toggles the FN lock on and off on my laptop.

Hope that's helpful as it was driving me nuts for a while

It actually worked, well i pushed the f12, num lock, and fn at the same time. And it WORKED. I never usually add my comments to anything, but I just needed to say thankyou for the tip

I'm having the same problem you guys are, with my Dell laptop. Someone mentioned that they had the problem when logged on to a certain user account. That hinted at a solution for me. So I tried something. I created a new user account in Windows XP, logged onto it, and suddenly the Fn key isn't stuck any more. If the other solutions listed here don't work, try this!

I had a similar problem with an old Tiny A430 laptop a year ago, and the way i fixed it was to take the keyboard out (they're really easy on these Tiny machines), and took the key off and washed it.

Keys on a laptop keyboard are VERY fragile, if you damage the plastic or rubber membranes, you're looking at replacing the whole keyboard assembly.

But, the moral of this is: Don't spill soda on your laptop keyboard KavanM!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The laptop keyboard was driving me crazy.
I have an old Compaq laptop and thought it was time to replace it, until I saw this message board.
Pressing Fn,F12, and NumLk at the same time resolved my issue.

but i got kinda frustrated for a sec or two, plz plz remember to hit all at the same time

DONT hold down Fn then F12 then Num Numlk

HAS to be Fn+F12+Num Lk at the exact same time...well for me...

Use Ctrl-Shift-NumLk - on an old Dell Inspiron 7500 Laptop

It worked for me as a toggle On/OFF.

NumLk is also the function "Scroll Lk" key.

For the help. On my Acer Aspire 5920, a new wireless keyboard by HP (Microsoft actually) had depressed the poor little guy.
FN + F11 fixed mine.
