For DVD dowloads, try Amazon Unbox

I was fooling around, a bit bored with everything working well.

I had used Amazon's mp3 download for music to great advantage. So, I went looking for video. Sure enough, although my buddy says it's been around for a couple of years, I just found it.

I bought 1 one hour episode of the Universe series from History Channel. Cost $1.99. It all went well because I used my Vista Home Premium machine which has Windows Media Center.

The download was slow, but after a short period of time, I could begin watching.

After the download, I was able to make a DVD.

Now is when the fun started.

You can download more than once, I think three times, on one purchase. So, I downloaded to my Vista Business machine, which does not have Windows Media Center.

Amazon Unbox videos are .wmv files with DRM. Only windows Media Center and Windows Media player can manage the DRM on .wmv files. Dell shipped my vista Business machine with Dell Media Center as the default for .wmv files. So, the file would not play.

I had about six email exchanges with Amazon, some over the weekend, and all answered promptly. And my famous RULE OF SIX came into play. The sixth tech explained how I should just give Windows Media player the .wmv file as a default.

That worked.

So, hey, you can not make a DVD and take it to your TV. But for $1.99, I bought a program on the possibilities of Extra Terrestrial life from the History Channel's series "Universe", now I have it on a DVD to watch any time, and two back up copies in case the dog eats the DVD.
