G3 and bits going cheep

Postby allen-uk » Sun 18 Feb, 2007 9:08 am

Hello all.

Shortly (weeks, hopefully), my beige 1997 G3 and all associated bits (comprising screen, CPU, keyboard, printer, zip drive, zip discs, etc) will be going spare.

So is there anyone within driving distance of north London who wants to give it a good home?

Or is there a market for it (you never know!)

Thoughts welcomed.

Allen, N.London.

Before you getting rid of it, can you take a photo of the beige G3, and show it to us?

With difficulty.

One of the reasons I've upgraded to the iMac is that it's almost impossible to get digital camera peripherals to run with OS8.6, hence I've still got my old 35mm film SLR (blimey, that's old).

So, I will be buying a digital camera in a few weeks, but would like to wave goodbye to the G3 before that as we have very little space....

Why do you want a picture, by the way?

Allen.

It's always interesting to see photos of old machines.

Great! Museum pieces, are we now?

As soon as I've got access to my new/ new iMac, I'll stick a picture of me on the site, as being very old (if not a machine).

A couple of years back, I put together my old Pentium (1) system,. circa 1997 and it still runs well with Mandriva Linux.

Only the motherboard is original from 1997, everything else, case, power supply, RAM, drives, monitor, etc. are more recent.

I stuck the package on 'Freecycle' for London, and first in the queue was a girl who had a G3 and no monitor, so she's taking the lot.

Well, actually when I say first in the queue, there wasn't any queue, only her, but I was pleased that it went to a good home rather than on the rubbish dump.

It is good that new homes can be found for computers.

Several years back when I finally got rid of the older Commodore computers I had, I brought them all down to the local Salvation Army thrift store. A week later, I went by there, and everything was gone, someone bought it all! :)

That's good, Edward.

The Freecycle sites are okay, but I am always a bit wary of those ads that say 'Poor student looking for fully functional modern digital video camera to complete coursework, please help', as you are never sure whether this actually is a poor student or whether your video camera will quickly find its way onto eBay.

I do take most of my surplus gear to the Oxfam shop instead, but with the G3 and all the bits, I wanted to reach a larger audience.

The girl who said she wanted the screen failed to show up to collect it, and the rest of the gear.

So, back to the first post.
