Mr. Gates acknowledged today that the company's error reporting service indicated that 5 percent of all Windows-based computers now crash more than twice each day.

But then, Gates goes on to say:
Mr. Gates said the company was considering the possibility of charging for some of its software updates that are now made available free over the Internet.

What a great advert for switching 100% to Linux and ditching Windows altogether!

Isn't it just! What a hoot, and I think it's absolutely wonderful that he will be charging for updates, as that should ensure a switch to another OS...

<most evil grin conceivable>

$50 for Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2000 SP5

"For a mere $50, users can now purchase THE best upgrades to Microsoft's products! These services packs fix key problems with Windows, and increase the stability of our proudcts."

OR . . . "Now we are making you pay for things that shouldn't need to be fixed in the first place!".

I believe that they are referring to things like the Movie Maker though, not services and security updates - or I bloody hope so anyway!

To recieve "Buffer Overflow Vulnerability Fix - MS0-666" please submit
your credit card details for a payment of US$50, and you'll be given a
link to download this critical patch. It is strongly recommended that
all users of Windows 95/98/98SE/NT4.0/2000/XP download this patch.

Soon that'll be more like Win2k and WinXP only, since Microsoft is already phasing stuff out that is older than that - just look at MS Office 2003!

It was suggested that I keep the Windows partition on the dual-boot system, in the event something happens to the Internet connection, I can boot up in Windows to provide the cable company with some information.

I really don't want to keep that Windows partition... :?

The moment MS actually start charging for security updates to Windows, then as far as I'm
concerned, Windows will no longer be on my PC. All three versions I currently have will be
deleted, and I'll use the CD's as coffee cup coasters, just like I do with surplus AOL discs!

As for my Macintosh, all existing Microsoft applications will be completely removed. Both
my PC and iMac will be 100% MS free, and I don't give a **** what my cable ISP says!

Seriously . . . I think the article was talking about the movie maker and stuff - not security hotfixes!
