Generating PNGs with alpha channel transparencies.

Postby Andrew T. » Fri 27 Aug, 2004 10:35 am

I would like to create an image to position and repeat along the top edge of a web page, that has a yellow area at top fading into the background color.

The sloppy job above was the best I could muster with my current software; a combination of Windows Paintbrush, IrfanView, Paint Shop Pro 4, and something called PaintStar I tried yesterday and still haven't quite figured out...

Is there any freeware or shareware graphics software available capable of generating PNGs with alpha channel transparencies, that 1) are relatively easy to use and 2) are capable of running on Windows 95?

I've been using Macromedia Fireworks for all the graphics for SillyDog701. Fireworks has this feature.

The latest version of Fireworks won't work with Windows 95. I think earlier version of Fireworks might.

Perhaps Windows 95 does not support alpha channel itself.

Thank you for your recommendation. This brings me to another question: Since Macromedia Fireworks MX 2004 indeed refuses to install on any Windows versions other than 98 (Second Edition only), 2000, or XP, where can I find an earlier free-trial release of the software to try, such as Fireworks 4? Macromedia's website contains only the newest version.

I found this thread at the Oldversion.com Forums with links to Macromedia Fireworks 4 and eariler versions. I am not sure if those are trial versions, though as I have not tested the links.
