Get "Solaris for x86" free from Sun Microsystems .

Hot on the heels of Sun Microsystems decision to give out free copies of StarOffice 7, now
they're officially freeing the x86 (for Intel/AMD based PC's) version of the Solaris operating
system of it's US$20 price tag to download it. I'm off to download myself a copy of it now.

Sun sets Solaris x86 free

Almost two years after it went on hiatus, Sun Microsystems' Solaris x86 has come back in full form with
free downloads of the operating system becoming available once again, The Register has discovered.

Some users call Sun's decision to give Solaris x86 away again a small step, but without doubt the
move does bring some degree of closure to part of a messy affair. Starting this week, Sun has
removed the $20 price-tag for the OS - versions 8 and 9, replacing it with a red FREE sign
instead. A fair number of Sun users have kept a close eye on this saga and will remember
that it was way back in Jan. of 2002 when Sun first said it would halt development
on Solaris x86 only to buckle and bring the OS back at cost.

If you've downloaded/installed it, can you post a screenshot?

I had installed it onto my "testbed" PC, but there is a problem with accessing the internet.
During Solaris bootup, it connects to my ISP (ntl:home broadband) via DHCP, and obtains
an IP address from the server. But, when I try to use the bundled browser, (which in this
case is Netscape Communicator 4.78) by default, it should connect to Netscape.com,
but instead it pops up dialogs that say it "cannot connect to home.netscape.com".

It's the same when I enter any URL into the browser Location bar . . . "cannot connect
to mozilla.org" . . . "cannot connect to djgm-i.net" . . . "cannot connect to sillydog.org".

Eitherway, even if this problem wasn't evident, I don't know how to get screengrabs of
the Solaris user interface. I don't think that Solaris has any dedicated screen capture
application bundled with it, and I don't know if any are available to download.

Until I can get the aforementioned internet problem sorted, Solaris is of no real use to
me. In fact, any OS that cannot properly connect to the internet is of little use to me!

I still have the CD's on which I burned the Solaris ISO images, so I might try again with
this particular OS in the future. Hopefully there's someone out there can offer a solution.

Re: The screengrab question, I believe you can get XnView for Solaris, that can capture images. I also imagine you could compile or download GIMP for Solaris.
