getting rid of a MS icon from Firefox

Postby miyagawafan » Fri 06 Aug, 2004 2:57 pm

i just noticed that there's a windows icon that has usurped the upper left corner of the firfox title bar(or whatever that bar is). it's that bar at the very top that either shows actice/inactive when and not in use. normally, the firefox icon should be there, but it has been replaced by the windows icon.

similiarly, the windows icon has replaced the firfox icon in the task bar when firefox is in use. other than that , there is nothing going wrong with firefox,,,,,,i simply want to get rid of anything microsoft, and this icon thing is REALLY bugging me!!!

This is a known bug in Windows 9x. Follow the instructions here to fix the icon.

It used to be that way, till recently. I do not recall when I, first, started to see the real stuff, but it is rather recent.

This is an annoying bug concerning the appearance of Mozilla Firefox that is affects Windows 95, 98, and ME. This has been documented in Bug 171349 and will hopefully be fixed sooner or later.

To reinstate the Firefox icon on the title bar and Windows taskbar, do the following:

> Go to the folder in which Mozilla Firefox is installed (usually [tt]c:\program files\mozilla firefox\[/tt])
> Go to the [tt]chrome[/tt] subfolder.
> In [tt]c:\program files\mozilla firefox\chrome\[/tt], go to the [tt]icons[/tt] folder, or create it if it is not present.
> In [tt]c:\program files\mozilla firefox\chrome\icons\[/tt], go to the [tt]default[/tt] folder, or create it if it is not present.
> Download this icon into your [tt]c:\program files\mozilla firefox\chrome\icons\default\[/tt] folder.

The next time you restart the program, the Firefox icon should then appear on the title bar and Windows taskbar instead of the "generic" Windows icon.

Somthing I noticed about this bug, the fix, as Andrew T. described above, only fixes the main Firefox window. Other Firefox windows, such as the Download Manager, still have the annoying, "generic" Windows icon.

In that case, try giving additional copies of the icon names such as [tt]downloadManager.ico[/tt], [tt]bookmark-window.ico[/tt], [tt]bookmark-window.ico[/tt], and [tt]jsconsoleWindow.ico[/tt].

The Mozilla Iconpacks site could come in handy here, methinks . . . !

I don't know, but DJGM's link says: Welcome to the Mozilla icon packs project page - THE place to get icons for Mozilla and Mozilla FireFox!

I guess, then that my problem had gone away when I got my new computer, with XP.

A long term update:

Alas, using the latest Mozilla Firefox trunk nightly build, Bug 171349 appears to be fixed. After unziping the Firefox 1.0+ file into a clean directory and running Mozilla Firefox with a new profile, I was delighted to see that there was a Mozilla Firefox window icon without me having to manually add a "main-window.ico" into the chrome/icons/default directory. Infact, when checking the folder in question, there was no "main-window.ico" present. Now the main Firefox window, download manager and all other auxillury Mozilla Firefox windows are complete with a Firefox icon.

What prompted me to check this was while I was using the latest SeaMonkey trunk nightly build, I'd noticed that the "Elemelt Properties" dialog window had displayed the Mozilla icon when in the past it had displayed the generic Windows icon(like Firefox), but no new icons had been added to Mozilla's chrome/icons/default directory either.
