Getting rid of Firefox Portables?

Postby jjssparkle » Thu 10 Sep, 2009 2:26 pm

How do I get Firefox Portables off my machine? Also, would having these have anything to do with when I close Firefox (regular) and then try to reopen later I get this message telling me that Firefox couldn't be opened because it is already running ...??? No, closed it 2 hours ago - now I want to reopen again to browse the web. Would the portables have anything to do with this or is this something else going on? Right now I have to reboot if I want to open Firefox which has led me to just using another browser.

When you say your machine, do you mean that you installed Firefox Portable on the computer hard drive? Normall, FF Portable is installed in an USB drive, but I have it, both on the USB drive and the hard drive. To remove it, all you need to do is to delete the folders. The link I gave you is to thhe portable apps.com site.
My FF portable opens independently of the regular FF. You, just, cannot have both FF open at the same time, but once one is closed, the other can be opened.
I have seen the behavior which you mention (not sure why), but it has nothing to do with FF portable.
If you have a problem which you mentioned, do Cntrl+Alt+Del, and delete the firefox.exe app, if present. You can open any FF after that without rebooting your computer.

CTL+ALT+DEL opens Windows Task Manager, it is not possible to delete an application from within Windows Task Manager, what you have to do is to highlight the application, Firefox.exe in this instance, and then click on End Process.

Dave.

Cntrl+Alt+Del brings up the Windows Task Manager. I should have said that clicking on the Processes tab, one finds the desired "Image name", which then could be deleted.
Sorry, I called "Image name" an app. Technically, it is not correct, but my friend has skipped some steps as I had, by saying

Sorry, no, you can't delete the Image Name in the way that you say, in fact, it isn't possible to delete anything from within Windows Task Manager! Pressing the Delete key has the same effect as clicking on End Process.

Dave.

What he is trying to say, is that by deleting the process of Firefox, you're ending it. Making you able to open it again without rebooting your machine.

As to get rid of the portables, simply delete the folder under which they were installed in, and they will be gone from your machine.

Dave,
you are, surely, trying to be difficult. Delete/End Process, so what? You want to eliminate the process, and sorry if I did not use the correct terminology. It is very clear that there is only an End Process button. Highlight the item that you want to close, and press the only button which is there ( or press Delete)..

Not at all.

I took what you said at face value, thinking you actually meant "delete the application". There is a big difference between ending a running application and deleting an application!

It is very clear that there is only an End Process button. Highlight the item that you want to close, and press the only button which is there ( or press Delete)..

True, however, my intention was to clarify what can and cannot be done in Windows Task Manager, for the benefit of those who are less familiar with it than are you or I.
