Getting rid of Spyware

Postby Antony » Fri 26 Dec, 2003 7:14 pm

SillyDog701 recommends Pest Patrol.

Pest Patrol has good information about most known spyware, adware, downloader, dropper, ... etc all sorts of unwanted files/programmes (or whatever you want to call it). It has a large library of those unwanted pests and good instruction on how to remove them manually.

Although they are selling their products, the Pest Research Center is a very useful reference centre.

Also recommended for ridding your system of spyware . . . Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware . . .

Caution about Adaware. It will quarantine files which you have to check out very carefully. I have not been able to use Eudora6.0, Sponsored Mode, because some files were made unavailable. Spybot gives a much better explanation of what's going on.

Spybot, Ad-Aware, The Cleaner, Anti-virus software and a good firewall are all essential to keep a Windows PC in good working order.

Good free programs are AVG and Kerio Personal Firewall. Of course, installing critical service packs and security patches is also a good thing to do, to ensure that you are immune to the latest lot of worms going around.

ZoneAlarm is another excellent firewall, available in a free version, I use it myself, and have never had a problem with it.

We started going on a tangent, from anti-Spyware to Firewall.
Thanks for the link, "brett".
I am finding the new AdAware 6.0 to work well along with Spybot S & D.
and, the best things is to stay away from Internet Explorer.

Even though I am a MSN user, I am staying clear away from IE as much as I possibly can. I have so much spyware detection/removal stuff on here (as well as ZoneAlarm Pro) thanks to my being a bit too paranoid.

My recommendation is to get as much protection your PC can handle. I have AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy, SwatIt (a trojan horse scanner/removal), Spyware Guard, Spyware Blaster, HiJack This, CWShredder, and Ad-aware 6. All have given me no probs.

I used adware for a while but got rid of it when I realized that I had to pay for it in order to get rid of the files. Usually norton will get most spyware so I don't have to worry about it..

Not a good idea

There are 3 versions of Adaware, one of which is (totally and completely) free.

I did come across PestPatrol, but could only use the "demo". The "demo" only finds the probs, but in order to get rid of the pests.....Id have to fork over some money. It did find some pests, but nothing too serious. Im pretty much satisfied with all the software I have.

ZoneAlarm Pro

Postby Don_HH2K » Sun 09 May, 2004 9:58 pm

In addition to a spyware removal tool, you should invest in a copy of ZoneAlarm Pro for Windows. You can subscribe at www.zonelabs.com
