graphic with URL address

Postby jillpmcd » Tue 18 Feb, 2003 9:09 am

How do you get a graphic to appear before the http in your URL location window? I don't see it in the source code but then I'm not really sure what I'd be looking for (just playing around with this stuff - don't really know what I'm doing)
Thanks to anyone who can help...very curious, and it seems like my questions always get answered here!

It's sometimes called a favorite icon or "favicon". Some web sites may choose to use one. SillyDog uses one.

If the browser supports favicons, as Netscape 7 does, and the web site chooses to use one, it will display the icon before the "http" in the address line.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Edward - but if you are building the website - how do you get the favicon there to be used in the first place - where in the html code is that determined?

Code: Select all
<link REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="/favicon.ico">

Antony may be able to explain the above tag.

Postby jillpmcd » Tue 18 Feb, 2003 2:13 pm

thanks...FYI if anyone else cares to try (and is as clueless as I was!)...I downloaded this free viewer program (http://www.irfanview.com/)
and saved my 16x16 gif as an ico file and then used your code line and that was all there was too it. (except it only shows up in Netscape 7.0 - no 4.7 and no IE 6...wonder why?)
Thanks again for the help.

IE6 supports favicons, however sometimes they appear and other times they do not. I'm not sure why that is the case.

Netscape 7.x supports them, but the Netscape Communicator series (4.x) does not.

Glad to hear that it worked for you.
