Help, 4.7 no longer works!

Postby dapple67 » Thu 20 Sep, 2007 4:46 pm

I use 4.7 to edit and make web pages. All of a sudden, it does not work any longer. I can usually get it to start, but then as soon as I start working on a page, it crashes. A window comes up that tells me that there is an error with Netscape. I know 4.7 is old, and I should really use something newer, but I love 4.7! I have 7.0, but it is not nearly as good as 4.7. Any help or advice would be great!

Do you see my post, next to yours? I wish I could help, but I have gone nowhere, and, apparently, no one else has any idea. By the way 7.0 is quite ancient, as is the latest Netscape7.2, which is over three years, and will not be upgraded.
If you use 4.7 just for web pages, there are newer programs.

Thank you for trying! Would you recommend any other programs to edit and make web pages that is pretty user friendly? Wow, I did not know that 7.0 was old too. I just really like the really old 4.7. It worked the best...Thanks again!

I cannot advise you on this matter. I have not even tried to create a web page in the past 6-7 yrs. As far as I know NS7.2, any late Mozilla, or its successor Seamonkey would fill the bill. There are other choices as well.
I gave up, today, after trying to get NS4.79 or 4.8 going, and failing with nauseating regularity, even using a Users profile from a friend.
If you want to use a program for creation of webpages, it is best to use something which is up-to-date. These daysmany webpages do not not work with old programs, which have, also, vulnerabilities. I lost count, but I think that there have been some 30 updates, mostly security updates, after NS7.2, and forget about NS4.x. But, they, still, work, under certain conditions.

I can not personally recommend the programs below. My post is based on a very quick Google search for NVU, the spin-off of the web composer portion of Netscape 7.x.

The original web page for NVU now appears to be almost dead, up-for-rent, and downloads of NVU are non-functional from links connected to that site.

A program called KompoZer seems to have taken over and is currently at version 0.7.10 (2007-08-30).

A forum for beginners for KompoZer is located here

I was able to get the 4.7 communicator to work. You just have to turn off your internet access when you first open it. Once open, you can then turn your internet back on. So glad it is working...for now at least!

May be I don't understand what you do, but how can you open a program with internet access off? It is not going to go anywhere. But., I may check this one of these days.

I tried the suggestion, and it does not work for me. The installed 4.8 comes with an empty Users profile, and selecting Utilities|User profile, I get a blank page. Clicking New does nothing. Attempts to open 4.8 with or without internet access fail, but provide a 5-7 MB line in the Windows Task Manager|processes.
Even a "borrowed" user profile is not accepted. Oh well, I don't need any NS4.x!

I work on a laptop. Before I open Netscape, I switch the wireless botton off. After I open Netscape, a window comes up that says "Netscape unable to find the server". I just close that window, and then click on Communicator and then Composer, and it works. Once I have the Composer working, I can turn my internet (wireless botton) back on, and it will still work. Hope that makes sense!

It makes sense, but it does not happen to me. I don't have a wireless button, so I have to unplug the modem. Absolutely nothing happens, other than a balloon popup which tells me that my Internet connection is not available (not for Netscape only).

Sorry that it does not work for you. I have not tried it on my regular computer. I still cannot use the internet/home page on 4.7 Netscape, but I can use the composer to edit and make web pages. If I do not turn off my wireless, the whole thing shuts down shortly after I open a page...
