Help! How to recover encrypted files...?

Postby daletu » Mon 19 May, 2003 1:19 pm

I recently just re-installed Windows XP, but I forgot to recover the encrypted files in another drive.
After re-installed Windows, the privilege has changed, so I can't recover those files any more.
Is there any way to recover those files?

Thank you very much!

Basically, if your priviliges have changed, so have to find a way to log in as administrator. Below is a reference which says so, for Win2k

If you do a search asking for encrypted file Win XP, you will get more relevant stuff. That's another example of Win XP being a nuisance.

Fulvio: It's called security.

An administrator account should be able to open those files, yes.

I am sorry! It doesn't work...I tried...

I think its because the privilege was belong to the administrator of previous Windows XP (before I reinstalled)...
Now...after reinstalled XP...something inside changed...maybe some codes or something...it just doesn't work that way...

what should I do????

Make sure the computer name is the same as before, and if the files are from a winnt/win2k domai, ya gotta have adminstative rights for the domain!

Make sure you logged in with administrator privilege.
Open Windows Explorer ( Win + E ),
Select Drive or folder, then context click* it, select Properties.
Select Security tab.
You should see Group or user names on top.
Select you or Everyone.
Add permissions for yourself.

* context click is commonly known as right-click.

I did not ask you to add new users.

What you should do, select you, such as 'Administrators', then allow yourself with full accesses.

Note: you should see a number of users such as...
Account Unknown (S-1-5-32-1292438093.....)
Administrators (.....\...)
CREATOR OWNER
Everyone
Guest (....\....)
SYSTEM

Okay, I guess you haven't enabled sharing/security.
Once you enabled it, you will see both Sharing tab and Security tab.

It looks a bit complicated than this, if you encrypted the file (not the access control - security).
I will try to see if I can figure out how to a way of recovering user account.
