Help in using GIMP

Postby EddiePaxil » Fri 03 Mar, 2006 1:46 am

OK. I've been getting to know my way around OSX pretty well now. However, on this one I'm very lost. I'm not even in the Ballpark.

I downloaded a Photoshop-esque program from download.com which is free. Completely free, not free to try, nothing, just free. It looks very good. However, upon downloading it I find an amalgamation of files in s folder that looks like something out of the "Windows" folder in XP Pro.

After doing a little research I've found that I'm supposed to use X11 (which I wisely installed "just in case") to use this. The problem is I have no idea how. Has anyone used this. Or does anyone have any clue how to take source files in OSX and use X11 to run them as an Application.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Eriel,

I assume you are using Panther. If you can't launch GIMP by the Mac way (double clicking it), you might need to start it from X11.

For Panther, (if memory serves correctly,) X11 should be under /Applications/Utilities, double click it, and follow the command that's required to run GIMP. X11 is similar to Terminal.

If you plan to use graphic tools a lot, I would like to recommend Photoshop Elements. It's not as powerful as full version Photoshop, but it's much easier to use (less confusing buttons, menu options, and controls) and much faster to launch. To my knowledge, Don_HH2K, beanboy89, TK19 and I are all using Photoshop Elements. It's a lot cheaper than full Photoshop.

Hope these help.

I'll give it a shot. Thanks Anthony

Maybe you should try Gimp.app, a free Mac-like way to install gimp, and to run it along with X11 by simply double-clicking it:
