help needed to do avatar

Postby richard mitnick » Fri 10 Jul, 2009 10:45 am

I found a photo in my collection which I want to use as an avatar. It is 490kb in .jpg. The limit for SillyDog is 9kb(???). I cannot find a file format that will give me a 9kb image. I tried .gif and .tif. They were actually larger.

Any help?

If you resize the picture down (the picture dimension), you should be able to get it in the right size. .jpg is recommended.

If you have problem resizing, let me know.

Thanks, I got it down to just under 9kb. But, look how teensie weensie it is, compared to yours. Can I in any way get some more size?

Use something like XnView to resize the image to 80x80 pixels. Save it as a JPEG file with compression set at 50% or so. You'll end up with an image within the limits.

Speaking of avatars, it would be nice to be able to use larger avatars with larger file size limits. 80x80 and 9kb file size limits were fine six or seven years ago when people used 1024x768 as their resolution and had a dialup connection. But with the average resolution being at least 1280x1024 these days, and most people owning broadband internet of some kind isn't it about time the possibility of increasing these anemic limits was considered?

Mandrake-

Hey- thanks so much. I actually had the XN program, I do not remember why, I could not get 80X80, either 80x60 or 108x80. But, I got a fair bit more size at actually a smaller file, just over 7kb instead of just under 9kb.

So, thanks loads.

80x80 would be a square, forcing that image size on a rectangular photograph would give you a squashed image which wouldn't look very good at all. 80x60 is about the best you'll get. :)

You know, avatars are just a little frill. They can be funny, cute, whimsical. I just went to all of my forums to try to use my avatar. Some forums accept anything, some nothing. One group of forums I went to are the forums for my BOINC projects. They have an even more restrictive limits and one that I am not sure I understand: 100 x 100 and 4kb. 4kb!! And then, even though my reduced size is just under 9kb, and even though all BOINC projecfts have the same Profile software, some projects accepted the avatar and some did not.
