HELP _ NS 4.8 and Hotmail

Postby fgh234 » Wed 11 Feb, 2004 5:36 pm

I'm using Win95 on a pentium II 333MH, 64Mb with NS 4.8. It does what I want - e-mail, research and occasional shopping. from a couple of weeks ago Hotmail ceased to work properly. I can log in, get up my inbox list, but then cannot open messages old or new. If I go to the public library and go online there with a recent version of IE, it all works OK. I have made no changes at all. What is going on? For about the same time have hit a few funnies with other sites too. I get to the home page and then to my first selection OK but then cannot go back or to another page and have to go into site again from outside.
I'm stuck - any ideas please?

Frank,

It sounds like Netscape 4.8 is just getting too old to do everything you want now, as Netscape 4 was originally released way back in 1997. However, your computer is fast enough to run a newer browser, here are the options I see:

 Upgrade to Netscape 7.02 (7.1 has a nasty memory leak that effected Windows, mainly 95/98/Me). You can get 7.02 from here.

 Upgrade to Mozilla 1.6 - Mozilla is essentially an open-source version of Netscape 7, they are almost identical - although Netscape is no longer being developed, and Mozilla is still being developed. Mozilla can be downloaded from here.

Neither browser should have any troubles importing your Netscape 4.x profile (Bookmarks, emails etc).

I did not see this, but I am glad that we agree.

Netscape 4.8 and Hotmail

Postby fgh234 » Mon 15 Mar, 2004 5:03 pm

Thanks for the advice Mandrake and others. I downloaded NS7.02 without problem and it picked up my address book OK with no action from me.
The good news is that it solved the Hotmail problem and sorted some of the sites I was having trouble with. Others still malfunction - I guess some sites only cater for IE and never think of anything else. Also, very strangely, images seem a bit sharper!!!
The bad news is that it is a bit slower and is dificult to fire-up. When I hit the NS 7 icon I get the small NS 7 title panel only and then the logon panel from my dialler. If I complete this normally absolutely nothing happens and NS does not load. The way round this is to cancell the browser panel when it appears - the rest of NS then loads. I then have to minimise this window and activate the dialler again manually. If I then hit "home" as connection is made it works!!!
This is not 21st century technology, PDP-11s worked Ok 30+ yrs ago without having to sneak up on them! Have I missed out some idiot level operation ?

Netscape 7.02 will take longer to start up on a 266mhz processor than Netscape 4 would, but Mozilla 1.6 is more advanced than Netscape 7.02, it would load a bit faster, due to optimizations in the code.

Sometimes when sites don't load in NS4 I try them in NS 3 and they work fine so I guess it's a problem with NS 4.

I recomenned that you download Mozilla Firefox\1.6
or Netscape 7.0x There is a definate Win 9x problem with 7.1 but it's OK in XP Pro

If you are looking for something fast and fairly recent, you should look at K-Meleon at http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net which is based on Mozilla 1.5.

It is fine, but has no mail, though. But, if there is another mail client, it can be opened using the View Source with Extrenal Command.
