HELP WITH MY PRINTER!!!

Postby adrianathequeen » Fri 12 Oct, 2007 1:16 pm

My DeskJet is driving me crazy!! I keep hooking it up and my monitor keeps showing a huge white screen everytime I try to print something. I’ve already tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Anyone have any clue?
THANKS!! :?

What model of Deskjet is the printer and is this under Windows, MacOS, or Linux?

I just threw away a DeskJet 3745v because it "malfunctioned". When it was turned on one day, the carriage simply went back and forth from side to side, banging the inside of the printer on both ends so hard that the printer was jumping.

You shouldn't be getting a white screen while trying to print something. Are any error messages coming up before or after this?

Fronm the leading post:
I’ve already tried uninstalling and reinstalling.
Does this mean only the physical connecton of the printer, or are you referring to the printer driver? What is the source of the driver: the CD that came with the printer, or have you downloaded the latest one from the HP website?

Do you get the white screen also when you try to run the 'Test Printer' routine?
Can you successfully perform any of the printer test/diagnostic routines?
What is the connection to the printer: printer cable, USB, or network?
Do you have a choice of more than one of these connections?
Has another printer previously worked on this port, or via the same connection method?
Have you contacted, or attempted to contact, HP?
Except for this white screen when attempting to print, do you have any other unexpected behavior on the computer?
When you get the white screen, what is the recovery: can you do anything else, or is the computer 'hung' and you have to reboot?
Is this a new printer, or has it previously worked on another computer? If new, is it still within warranty - can you exchange it for another machine?

I get the screen when I try to perform any troubleshooting, printer testing, and printing itself. I can only use a printer cable with it. I do not believe the computer has been hooked up to any other printer but I do know the printer was previously in use. The recovery is simple..I just have to con, alt, del. It is no longer under warranty.

Thank you for your answers. "I can only use a printer cable with it." is a clue I was hoping for. Just maybe this is a port definition problem - no guarantees.

Some printers support bi-directional communication with the host computer. With this, they provide additional status reporting details and diagnostics. This requires a cable that has all pins wired straight-through between the plugs at the ends; it is referred to as a BiDi cable, aka IEEE-1284. A 'standard' or 'normal' cable has only the minimum set of wires required to operate the printer, not all pins are connected. See this Wikipedia entry for some more information. Do you know if you have a 1284 cable (it is noticably thicker) as the connection? However a bidi-capable printer should operate (although 'degraded') with 'only' a standard printer cable.

So, how to change this? As a user with Administrative privileges: Go to Start > Printers & Faxes > right-click on your printer icon, and select Properties > (tab) Ports. Near the bottom look at the line "Enable bidirectional support". Try reversing (check or uncheck) the box and test.

Look too at the selections on the Advanced tab. It is possible that some setting here also may be involved. You'll have to experiment. Do the bidirectional business first.

Two additional thoughts: 1) I presume that you have double-checked that the printer cable is snugly plugged in at both ends. 2) Some printers have a self-test or self-diagnostic function that can be run with the printer disconnected from the computer. The User's Manual on the printer will give instructions on how to start this. This may involve pre-pressing some combination of the printer's buttons before turning it on.

Edited to add the last paragraph

1. Ah, thank you! May my wife observe and grade your kiss?
2. Hold the kiss until you know if this solves the problem. Remember, no guarantees.

If I recall correctly, the Deskjet 89X series first came out in the early 1990's, so the printer must be more than 10 years old.

At this point, it would be more cost-effective to buy a new printer, but be mindful of the fact that most (if not all) of the printers introduced within the past five years are all USB printers. If the computer in question has an available USB port in the back, you should be all set.

Although some parallel printers can be connected to a USB port by using a special cable and software (I was able to connect my Epson Stylus Color 400 and 640 printers this way.), I am not aware of any cable that works in reverse (that would connect a USB printer to a parallel port).
