For a while now I have tried to install and use Netscape (and Mozilla) but given up, since I can't configure them to use helper applications the way I want.

It seems to simple - I want most kinds of image files to be sent to a helper application instead of being shown inline; no questions asked, i.e. I don't want a Save/Open with-dialogue. It works fine in NS 4.7x - I just edit the mime types I want, e.g. image/jpeg and point to an external application (ACDSee in my case). However, those settings are not imported to NS 7 and creating new entries doesn't seem to have any effect. The images are still shown inline.

It doesn't even work for mime types that NS can't handle by itself - I get the Save/Open with-dialogue, but whatever settings I choose it doesn't remember my choice the next time and I get the dialogue again.

Is there any remedy for this problem or am I stuck with NS 4.7x?

Using Helper Applications in Netscape is very iffy. I literally spent a week trying to help a user configure Netscape 7.01 to use Media Player 8 to play WMV files (video/x-ms-wmv). Neither of us could ever get it to work. I was, however, able to configure IrfanView's IV_Player to do the job!

Netscape 7 is flawed in the area of Media, and certainly not as user friendly as Netscape Communicator. Whether or not you can configure ACDsee to view your images is a crap shoot. Have you tried using an alternative program, to see if it is only that application?
