Hewlett Packard declares war on Netscape . . . !

Postby DJGM » Sat 03 Jul, 2004 8:46 am

HP has issued a dire warning for people using Netscape on HP-UX, their version of UNIX . . .

HP has put out a red alert for users of the Netscape browser on HP-UX,
saying this software pairing could result in no less than total destruction.

As Treguard might say . . . "Oooh, nasty!"

Along with its warning, HP has dropped support Netscape on HP-UX.

I can only assume these warnings refer to the now obsolete Netscape 4.x series. Since HP are
recommending users switch to Mozilla, I'm sure these problems don't affect Netscape 6.x-7.x.

Full details in this (short) article at TheRegister.co.uk . . .

FOOTNOTE:
Since this issue affects a UNIX OS as well as Netscape, I've posted this in the General Tech forum,
rather than double posting it in the Netscape and Mozilla forum and the Mac OS and Linux forum.

before I read the article, how could a browser in an operating system resulting "total destruction"?

Netscape clearly is not embedded into HP-UX as MSIE in Windows, right?

Why do I beleive that this is some sort of deal between Microsoft and HP to get people running IE for UNIX on HP-UX.

You needn't worry about that. Microsoft cancelled IE5.x for UNIX, about two years ago.
And from what I'd heard back then, it was buggier than IE for Windows. A LOT buggier!

I didn't know that, perhaps because I haven't visited the IE homepage in two years...

Hi,
Also It is not avaible for download anymore.

Not officially at least. The Evolt.org Browser Archive still has it. So, (for what it's worth)
if you have either Sun Microsystems' Solaris, or HP's HP-UX installed here's the links:

Internet Explorer for Solaris systems and HP-UX systems . . .

Somewhat pointless perhaps, but there they are, if you'd like to try them

Still, I think Microsoft is making deals with some companies to ditch Netscape. For example, in ZoneAlarm 5 that has AlertAdvisor which tells you what to do with program access, if you didn't have Netscape configured for server permissions in previous versions, you get a message that says "AlertAdvisor: Select Remember This Setting and click Deny". Whereas with Internet Explorer in the same scenario: "AlertAdvisor: Select Remember This Setting and click Allow".

It can't be very good, that's all I can say..
