Hey, I'm new to LInux, and came across Mandriva...

As i said im new to linux, and i came across Mandriva's 2007 stuff.
I played with the live cd for a few days to get familiar with the kde desktop, and how it all runs, and after installing the single disc install, i boot it up, select linux from lilo, and after it starts up, it brings me to a login. the first time i tried it, i used the account login that i specified during the install. that didnt work. i reinstalled it all, specifying no passwords or user accounts, and still nothing.

the live cd didnt have this login, and i was wondering, is it necessary to have this login account set up? and is there a way to do it where you dont get the log in, and go straight to the kde desktop

in answer to my own problem, i installed mandrake off of the live cd i have, this solved my issues, now i just wanna get some stuff running. when i use the live cd on my friends laptop, the 3d desktop runs, it gives me the option at startup, and works perfectly. allowing me to move my windows to each side of the "box"

however, on this pc, it doesnt give me the option, which stinks, i was wondering if there was any way to enable this, or is it hardware specific?

i have a gforce fx 5500, which runs games pretty well actually, and as far as i can tell everything in my pc is newer than her laptop

Welcome to SillyDog!

It would be hardware specific, the video card/chip would have to support 3D.

In my two Mandriva systems, both also have nVIDIA cards, one has an older TNT2 M64 on it, the other contains a newer (2000) GeForce 2MX, neither card supports 3D.

The system with the GeForce 2MX, is a 166 MHz Pentium 1 system (circa 1997) and yes, Mandriva runs on it. :)
