March 31 2005: Terri Schiavo dies

Postby Antony » Wed 29 Mar, 2006 10:25 pm

31st March 2005, Teresa Marie "Terri" Schiavo passed away after her feeding tube was removed on 18th March 2005. Terri Schiavo was diagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) in 1990 with little chance of recovery.

Who2 wrote:An autopsy after Schaivo's death showed that Schaivo's brain had shrunk to about half normal size, and that Schaivo was blind. "No amount of therapy or treatment would have regenerated the massive loss of neurons," according to the medical examiner, Dr. Jon Thogmartin. However, the autopsy was unable to pinpoint the cause of Schaivo's collapse in 1990... Schiavo's case was considered to have political implications, as Florida governor Jeb Bush and his brother, U.S. president George W. Bush, both had been elected with the vigorous support of pro-life conservatives... Terri and Michael Schiavo were married on 10 November 1984.

29 August 2005 Hurricane Katrina

Postby Antony » Mon 28 Aug, 2006 10:08 am

On 29th August 2005, Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans. According to BBC News, up to 80% of New Orleans was flooded. New Orleans is a city under sea level and a city with high percentage of African Americans.

SillyDog701 has a detailed discussion on [sdt=9704]Hurricane Katrina[/sdt]. During Hurricane Katrina, SillyDog701's good friend Mr Jay Garcia absconded safely to Long View, Texas. He was healthy and safe.

The response from the Government of the United States of America was heavily criticised. Many people believe it was due to the race, class, and other factors that contributed to delays and willingness of government response.

Michael D. Brown (head of FEMA) resigned on 12th September 2005, but still received salary from FEMA (read: US taxpayers' money). He did not take much responsibility initially.

US Government's response to hurricanes in Florida was much faster than to Hurricane Katrina.

1997 Sept 5: Mother Teresa dies

Postby Antony » Tue 05 Sep, 2006 11:32 pm

On 5th September 1997, Mother Teresa dies.

Just few days after Princess Diana's death, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the Nobel Peace Prize winner who devoted her life to helping the sick and the poor, has died at the age of 87.
She died of a heart attack at the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta shortly.

Mother Teresa was born Agnesë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia, an Albanian Roman Catholic nun. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in India. She was awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her work as a poverty awareness campaigner.

She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 19, 2003 with the title "Blessed Teresa of Calcutta". She needs one more miracle to become a saint (canonised). Her miracle could well be a hoax (more detail).

1883 Jan 19: Let there be light

Postby Antony » Fri 19 Jan, 2007 6:15 am

On 19th January 1883 "Let there be light"

Thomas Edison's first village electric lighting system using overhead wires began operation in Roselle, NJ.

1883: Roselle, New Jersey, earns its place in tech history when the first electric lighting system employing overhead wires goes into service.

The system was built by Thomas Edison as part of an experiment to prove that an entire community could be lit by electricity. Edison, one of the most prolific inventors of all time, was known as "the Wizard of Menlo Park." That predates, apparently, the age of visionaries, geniuses and gurus.

20th March 2003 US invades Iraq

Postby Antony » Tue 20 Mar, 2007 4:17 am

20th March
Today is the 4th year anniversary of US-led invasion in Iraq.

US forces captured former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein on 13th December 2003. On 5th November 2006, He was found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging. [sdt=12735]Saddam Hussein was hanged[/sdt] on 30th December 2006.

The main reason (or excuse if you don't side with US) US force invaded Iraq was "to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction". Up until today, no weapons of mass destruction (WMD) have been found.

20 November 1947 the Queen and Duke married.

Postby Antony » Sun 18 Nov, 2007 8:37 pm

60 years ago (20 November 1947), Princess Elizabeth (the Queen) married Prince Philip (Duke of Edinburgh).

Prince Philip was born Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark in Greece. When he joined Royal Navy, he chose a surname, Mountbatten, he was known as Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. He abandoned "Price of Greece and Denmark" titles shortly before his marriage. On the day before his marriage, King George VI granted him the style of His Royal Highness, and on the morning of the marriage, the King granted him Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich.
