How can I convert my email files from 4.51 to 7.0?

Postby Mirth » Sun 03 Nov, 2002 9:32 pm

Hey, all:

I've been using 4.51 for some time now, and built up a large but organized body of saved emails. I still need to get at them all, but I just got a new computer with all the bells and whistles. I've downloaded 7.0, and it's working fine -- BUT. It appears 4.51 email folders are .snm files and 7.0 is something else, and 7.0 can't seem to read the old ones, even when I copy the folders into the new directory. Changing the .snm to the new suffix makes no difference, and even my network guru husband can't figure it out.

I really need a quick fix on this -- there are emails in the past week to which I must reply -- can anyone help?

Thanks so much,
Ellen

Ellen, no one would know how to deal with this, unless you would know what files are about. Your 4.51 will have one file with no extension and one with an extension. Only the one with no extention contains your messages. The .snm file has the headers, and, it would be pointless to have a header file pointing to nowhere. So, the .snm file should be ignored. You need to copy the Inbox, Sent, and that's about it from the 4.51 user profile folder/Mail to the counterpart in WinXP. The Netscape 7 profile are placed, by default (whose fault?) in Documents/name of registered XP user/Application Data/Mozilla /Profiles/profile name/blahblah.slt/Mail.
If the e-mails are in folders named differently than Inbox, there is no problem. Otherwise the 4.51 Inbox will overwrite the 7.0 Inbox, and it probably does not matter. So, find the folder, and Copy from 4.51, and Paste to 7.0. Copy is safer than Cut, because things that you cut have ways to disappear. Personaly, I set up my 7.0 with the same settings as in 4.51.

Netscape 4.5+ and Mozilla use the same format for mail files, so this should not cause any problems at all. I'm not sure if this also applies to Netscape 4.0x, which is irrelevant in this thread anyway :)
