How do you keep your Browser(s) and OS running healthy?

Postby Dennis L. » Thu 05 Dec, 2002 4:15 pm

What are your favorite applications to keep your browser and OS running smoothly.. or at least with a minimum of heart skips. Most of my choices are based on popularity and ease of use. All of these app's are run once or twice per week. Here's mine... Post your favorites.

Norton System Works 2002... Use everything including GoBack, not Ghost.
Adware, Internet CleanUp (cache and history files). Cookies managed by N7.
Big Fix and Windows Update both set at notify.

** My only concern, are there any temp. type files requiring manual cleanup's.**

Quite simple. By NOT using Internet Explorer. I have it blocked at the firewall.

In fact, there was an article tonight at Cnet News http://news.com.com/ about another new security patch available for IE 5.5 and 6.

I use Linux for an OS, and as for Mozilla, I regularly maintain my profile by removing obsolete configuration options, things like XUL.mfasl and various rdf files that need recreating from time to time, etc.

If you want to block IE, and you're on an NT based OS (NT4, Win2000, WinXP), you can do this to disable IE, without having to worry about the firewall :)

I'm noticing a trend, disable or block IE. I use IE 6.0 (yes, today's patch applied) less than a hour per year.. emergencies only. I started surfing in 1994, about 10 - 15 hours per week.
NEVER been bit by a nasty. Is it that simply... No IE, no problems?

Well, just install different Netscape into different locations (directory). And try not to use IE unless absolutely necessary.

I use Enough is Enough IE Lockdown and have removed OE from my Windows 98SE system.

I do a thorough ScanDisk once/week
Defrag once/month

Delete the Cache folder, history.dat, and XUL.mfl files at the end of each online session.

Do a Scanreg/Opt about once/month

It is also well known that Windows Nt4, Windows 2000 and Windows XP are much more stable than Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE and Windows Me. Of course, Linux puts Windows' stability to shame!

Basicaly to Ramona et al

Do a Scanreg/Opt about once/month

regards the delete of XUL.mfl Am I correct that this is rebuilt by NS.?

Awhile back another thread (posibly another forum) suggested NSMOZ.BAT for deleting cache and history.

Could you add the command to delete the XUL.mfl file to this .bat file

For those who never heard of NSMOZ.BAT:

______________________________________________________________
rem NSMOZ.BAT
rem Netscape 7 or Mozilla

deltree /y c:\windows\applic~1\mozilla\profiles\default\xxxxxxxx.slt\cache
deltree /y c:\windows\applic~1\mozilla\profiles\default\xxxxxxxx.slt\history.dat
______________________________________________________________

Thanks to all in advance

You'll notice the windows screenshots I included in the page I linked to are taken using VNC... on a Linux box :)

I've migated to W2000 from W98SE. IMHO, W98 is a virus unto itself. W2000 is so much more stable. Nonetheless, I do a few things to keep it running:

1. defrag my hard drives every 2 weeks or so, or when I add or remove software

2. I use Window Washer after every browser or mail session to clean out history, cache, cookies, temp files, etc. It not only deletes the files, but it overwrites the slack file space and performs a security overwrite that complies with US govt. specs.

3. I use BlaceIce as my firewall

4. Download the weekly DAT files for Norton Anti-Virus (and do a full scan every few weeks)

5. I don't use IE unless it's an emergency or I need to download a W2000 security patch

6. I don't use Norton Utilities because my experience is that Norton "fixes" things that aren't broken. I had lots of problems with Norton "fixing" the registry keys that NS 4.79 uses.... I finally figured out which file associations it was changing, but I won't use Norton again, except for its anti-virus program.

7. To clean out the registry, I use EasyCleaner and RegScrubXP, both free programs. They work well and don't mess up the registry (I've tested a lot of cleaners, and I like these the best). Moreover, they archive all changes so you can restore any change you make. And I use Erunt to back up the W2000 registry (it also defrags the registry hives -- a really nice feature).

8. I also back up to CD-R.. just in case....

Long live Mozilla/NS

Hendikins: I did infact notice. I'm running Linux on my Sun SPARC box - and its reliable. Month of uptime no troubles. NT4 has gone about a month without a reboot too....

I "hope" you're not going to become angry with me since I'm answering your question sincerely. You know from my past posts that I don't know a great deal about computers (even though I've been using them for five years now). I have rarely been bothered by any problem. My computer seems to behave itself and I don't do any of the things you have mentioned. Granted, I'm hesitant to "mess around" with it by adding this and that. When I encounter a problem (such as the Mozilla extra buttons the other day) I usually remove the problem through Add/Remove. That's about it. Defrag? Yes... about once every three months. IE never presents a problem and Outlook Express has never bothered me either. In fact, I find it a great newsreader. I use Incredimail and love its skins.

Sorry. I'm no tweaker and prodder. Up until Netscape Communicator 4.7, I was a faithful Netscape user. When Netscape sold out to AOL, I guess I grew discouraged and fell into using IE (first 5 and now 6). It simply "works" folks. I've not been bothered by viruses, perhaps because I'm careful what I download (I usually don't download much) and because I use a great firewall and anti-virus program.

LOL... well... uh... what can I say? At least I'm truthful and you'll notice that I've logged in this evening using Netscape 7. Hey... I'm not the enemy... really. I just don't get too worked up about one browser versus another. I tend to defend whatever is under attack and that has included me sticking my neck out on the MS forum from time to time. I can imagine that Jay Garcia would love to wring my neck. But in truth... I am NOT the enemy. I'm glad Netscape continues to offer an alternative.
