How Do You Use Your Browser?

Postby James » Fri 22 Jul, 2011 1:42 pm

I have about ten or so places that I visit each time I go online. And I find that I visit and revisit these sites multiple times (i.e. SillyDog is one of them). I've tried pinning their tabs (I use Firefox) but that somehow seems unsatisfactory to me. Instead, I've found the easiest way is to use the Bookmarks bar just under the Toolbar. Some of my sites are grouped together in folders on the Bookmarks bar and some (like Facebook) stand alone. Using the Bookmarks bar which is simply a strip of monitor real estate, keeps those ten or so sites always visible no matter what site I am on.

I've tried using IE9's pinning sites to the Taskbar but I find that much less efficient. It treats sites as though they were applications and while it's easy to open each site, it does not really allow for a continuous flow through the web. Instead of having my ten sites always available, I have to close that site then open another from the Taskbar. Oh... I could type the URL or part thereof into the address box but that's extremely inefficient when all I need to do is use a favorites bar (similar to the Bookmarks bar) just beneath the Toolbar.

But, Edward. The point is not where you're going but how you're using your browser to get there. That is... do you use a Bookmarks bar, pinned sites...???

I have a ton of bookmarks as well, Edward, but I generally only use a quarter of them on a daily basis.

Currently I use three browsers (IE 9, FF, and Chrome) and with each I have a favorites/bookmarks bar loaded with my favorite sites. I group sites that are the same into folders that I place on the favorites/bookmark bar (i.e. e-mail folder contains: gmail, hotmail, aol mail). The beauty, in my opinion, of having a favorites/bookmark bar "is" the simple fact that no matter where you go on the internet, it is always there above the site. There it is... you're ready to go to the next site with a single click. The problem with using a speed-type dial as Opera and Chrome has, is that after you go to a site and then wish to navigate to the next... you need to go back to the speed dial window (first click) and then click on the site you wish to go to (second click). AND doing it this way means you have to change the way windows and tabs works which I do not want to do.

Pinning sites to the task bar and then clicking on them opens a site as though it were an app. Now if you wish to go to the next place, you go back to your task bar and click on the next button. So far, it's exactly like the bookmarks/favorite bar operation. BUT if you wish to navigate "away from" that site, you cannot do it as easily as you do with the bookmarks/favorites bar set-up since the window you're in is a special app window. You have to try this to see what I'm saying. Trust me... it's simply not as efficient.

I've tried pinning sites to the tabs in FF but that also does not work as efficiently as the bookmarks bar.

Simply put... the bookmarks bar cannot be beaten. The only downside is that it takes up some monitor space, albeit not very much.

I was curious how many others were using the bookmarks/favorites bar on a regular basis. I'm having a hard time understanding why so many don't see the beauty and efficiency of browsing in that manner.

Opera, I no longer use, due to issues printing with their Linux version. I filed a bug report a good four years ago and no one attempted to get back to me. AFAIK, no one bothered to even look into it. That did not leave me with any warm, fuzzy feelings about Opera, so I eventually stopped using their Windows version as well.

Up to now, I haven't used the "speed dial" feature of Chrome/Chromium. If I try to use it on my K6-2 box, it slows down the browser a little bit due to the CPU.

I mostly still use SeaMonkey/Firefox (or in Debian, they're known as Iceape and Iceweasel). :)

And like you, Edward, I keep coming back to Firefox as well (although I have the other browsers in my arsenal so to speak). But my point was: how do I make this browser most efficient in terms of navigating to my favorite sites, using as little monitor screen as possible for tool bars and so forth. And to date I cannot find a better way than the bookmarks bar even though this bar is several years old. And pinning sites to the tabs while close to being a better solution, is really little more than another way of presenting the same thing.

What I see with the bookmarks bar, is that it's somewhat limited to what is displayed. If the site name is too long, it's truncated, plus if there are enough of them on the bar that a pull-down list appears at the far right, the pull-down list would not really be any different than using the Bookmarks menu that the browsers have. :?

The most frequently visited websites are in the bookmark bar under a folder. For some, I simply type the URL into the address bar.

I also have a huge list of websites bookmarks, under bookmark section. I keep them, but don't visit them often.

Image
I also use Safari's Top Sites feature (as image above).
The reason I use that feature? Safari indicates if the website has been updated (since last visit) with a blue star.

Edward, Antony put me on to creating folders in the bookmarks bar some years back. Say for instance you have several email sites you visit. Create an email folder and then drag those sites (i.e. hotmail, yahoo mail, gmail, aol mail and whatever) into that one folder. Clicking on that folder in the bookmarks bar brings up a drop down menu showing those related sites. I generally have no more than ten folders and/or sites in my bookmarks bar with no need for a truncated bar.

Antony... that Safari trick is pretty cool.

Edward,
You can edit the name of bookmark. Shorten it and drop out unnecessary words.

James,

I am glad that you like the folders in bookmark bar arrangement.

I hope you know that you can drag a site directly onto the folder in bookmark bar when adding a new bookmark ;-)

Sure do, Antony. And I frequently rename the site after dragging it into the folder by right clicking and going to Properties then giving it a short name. Seriously, what could be simpler than a bookmarks bar? But still... people want pinned this and pinned that... speed dials and so forth. Why? It makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Antony's image above, is similar to what is seen in Chrome/Chromium (e.g. speed dial). I think there is an option to either display the image of the web page itself, or just to display the link for the page.

In a few cases, I have had to shorten the name of a bookmark. I think the web browsers pull the name from one of the HTML tags and uses that name by default. Some of them are indeed long...

I saw the same question in WindowsBBS, to which I replied. But, I will summarize: I keep folders in my Personal Toolbar, which I rename, in shorthand of sort, so that I can fit as many a possible.
I have 14 folders, and 7 individual sites. Since all this goes back quite a way, sites like this are in the "Netscp" folder. I move items, as I see fit.
In Firefox, I use the Prefbar.
