System Requirements

Postby Don_HH2K » Sun 09 May, 2004 6:24 pm

If you're holding on to Netscape Communicator because of the system requirements (except in the case of Mac 68k and Win 3.x), you can try Mozilla M17, which I run on a 100MHz machine with no problems. You can get it at http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonk ... ase-notes/ , or you can get a more recent distribution based on Gecko called K-Meleon at http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net . If you want the Netscape features you can do an FTP search for a 16.1MB file called NetscapeSetup.exe, which will always be Netscape 6 PR1, because the installer name was changed after PR1.

I personally wouldn't bother using old Netscape 6 or Mozilla releases on a regular basis...they are rather unstable, have rendering problems, and half-baked features. Unlike most programs, recent Mozilla releases have actually gotten slightly faster and more efficient in performance. The system requirements are somewhat subjective; some people are satisfied with running Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, or Netscape 6/7 on systems under the published requirements, and RAM can compensate for processor performance to some degree.
Overall, I would strongly recommend K-Meleon to users wishing for a modern, Gecko-based browser offering decent performance on older computers. The most recent version, 0.8.2, is based on Mozilla 1.5.

K-Meleon

Postby Don_HH2K » Sun 09 May, 2004 7:27 pm

The only problem I have with K-Meleon is that it has no mail feature. I have tried Thunderbird as far back as 0.1 and even that runs slowly. I like Milestone-17 because it seems to run OK and it can switch quickly between Navigator and MailNews. I tried NS PR1 for awhile but found it to be extremely buggy, so I don't use it anymore. I never tried Milestone-18 because Milestone-17 seemed to be working OK.

I still use 4.76 to access my on line banking service. In their infinite wisdom, Natwest refuse to recognise a version higher than 4.78, despite their more enlightened cousins on the Fastpay site having a set up that will allow 7.x and mozilla
I've had every NS version since 3.0, and paid for every upgrade since 4.5.

Ive got to feeling lately that web browsing with XP/IE is like walking round with a sign board marked "mug me please"

Hence the Linux/Mozilla setup, which is faster, nicer, easier any way.

4.0 EMAIL

Postby dogmom » Fri 18 Jun, 2004 8:40 pm

I have tried every email program from 4.0 to 7.1 and some webmails and browser type email programs. I use 4.0 on my new XP machine and the other W98 machines. I cannot find any email program that I like better.
Have problems using the 4.7 browser on the machines now and am not sure why but use it sometimes or mostly 7.0. Have never used outlook and saw no reason to use IE when I used it on other's machines.
So 4.0 is our one and only email program!

Where did you get the domestic version of Communicator 4.0 gold.

Netscape Communicator 4.0 is available from SillyDog701 Netscape Browser Archive.

I find the original release of Netscape Communicator 4.0 very buggy...for example, I can count on the browser crashing sooner or later when I have JavaScript enabled. It's obvious quite a few bugs were fixed through the course of Communicator 4.01 through 4.8. If it works for you, however, who am I to complain?

Hi,
Dogmom has the Domestic version.
I am fully aware of the Netscape Browser Archive.
I have done some help with it as you can probably see.

Old discs

Postby dogmom » Sat 19 Jun, 2004 5:58 am

"Where did I get the old copies?" I have them on disc. We never throw anything out and I have the 4.0 disc and book and there is a copy of 4.78 on an Earthlink disc that I have. I now copy all my discs and have originals and backup copies because I find it much easier to install from disc than waitng hours on my dialup connection (after which I get an error message!)
Also I have set up my parents with NS 4.78 and they have disc copies too. They mostly use 4.78 but I recently installed 7.0 for them. My Dad is 83 and he likes to look stuff up online.
There may be copies at your local Library. Ours has some in the NS books and last week I bought a copy of NS 2.0 with the disc in it. (dont ask WHY, just call us packratts!)

The NatWest OnLine Banking service has been supporting Mozilla for about two months now. More info
in this MozillaZine article - "UK Banks NatWest and The Royal Bank of Scotland Now Support Mozilla".

Hi,
Sadly the Number of users of these browsers is going down.
I wish it was the reverse.

Natwest and Mozilla (Slightly OT)

Postby whitegold » Fri 23 Jul, 2004 5:15 am

Thanks for that reply, Greg.
(Pity I don't visit here that often)

I just set up the Moz1.7 on the PC/XP for 'her indoors, and to my great surprise, it accessed NWOLB without a hitch.

However, there was a problem on the payment screens, which was sorted by the Help centre.
Seems that it requires the character set to be windows1250.
NatWest's tech person was more than happy to talk Mozilla , which is a huge turnaround from years gone by.

I'm now off to start a thread ref www.pru.co.uk which remains unapologetically IE-only!

Having just looked at Prudential's technical FAQ, I've found this . . .

Pru wrote: What kind of web software/computer do I need?

Prudential's website should run on all modern computers
provided you have an up-to-date Internet Browser.

The site is designed for PC versions of Internet Explorer 5.0 and
higher and Netscape Navigator 6.0.

If you'd like to upgrade your browser or feel you may be
experiencing browser-related problems visit either:
www.microsoft.com/downloads

Parts of the Prudential website also use Flash software, if you are
not sure if you have Flash installed on your computer - or you want
to check you have the latest version of Flash visit the Macromedia
website. Many of the Prudential brochures are available on the
website as PDF files. To open and view these files you must
have Adobe Acrobat Reader software on your computer. Once
you have Adobe Acrobat the file will open automatically with this
program. To download Acrobat Reader please visit the following page.
<>Downloads Page

This is the bit that concerns me about all that . . .

Pru wrote:If you'd like to upgrade your browser or feel you may be

They only provide a link to Microsoft's download site, which suggests that if you're
using a non-IE browser, then installing IE is considered an upgrade. The fact is
if you're using any current or recent Mozilla based browser, installing IE
is a downgrade, not an upgrade. Same goes, if you're using Opera.

Prudential IE only website

Postby whitegold » Sat 24 Jul, 2004 3:39 am

Yes........
Of course pru.co.uk can offer all sorts of things in their technical blurb.
So far as I can tell, it won't work with 4.76, or 7.1 so I can't confirm their reference to supporting NS6
Sorry, Mr Prudential, I'm afraid I dont really have the time or the inclination to roll back through old browsers, just to find one that works.

(Cynical old me wonders if the claim to support NS6 is made in the light of the relative low uptake of that version, ie count the subset of Pru customers/online/NS6users)

Pru.co.uk problems with current Moz version are now posted on Bugzilla #252749
