How Not to Design a Web Page

Postby Blackbeard » Wed 01 Dec, 2004 10:52 am

The example shown exhibits a webpage that really sucks!!!! A Web Page first and foremost should be informative................. Our 'Design' Team at MSN could not have got it more wrong!!!!

Image

MSN MESSENGER DOWNLOAD

What VERSION are we supposedly downloading?????.................. There is absolutely SFA information in this respect on the page.... you can link to international versions which no doubt are equally as vague......................

And to top it all of - no contact link or visible form to inform MSN of such things!!!!

- No wonder People are telling me they're being offered web sites 'in a box' for next to nothing!!!! No doubt they're better than The corporate sites which obviously have a much higher price tag!!!! This is one of the worst web pages I have ever viewed in terms of what it's supposed intention is (To get the user to download their product!!!!) - without any information to say what the product actually is or what version you are downloading it might as well be spyware!!!!!

One Reddeming factor - in terms of graphics & layout it's a nice example and navigation's not bad either.............but the worth of a webpage is only as good as the information thereon and as a professional example this one is hugely lacking!!

It might be interesting to note that although you can choose to "Download Later", if you choose to "Download Now" then you are required to install an ActiveX control that downloads the "Download Later" package. Pointless? Yes.

As if The web page doesn't say enough already!!!!

Gotta remember this is Microsoft we're talking about!!!! There NEVER is ANY Point.......... save finding new ways of Squeezing Microsoft $$$'s from the unsuspecting and hopelessly dependent Microsoft Junkies

I heard all the Microsoft Geeks touting the joys of Visual Studio.Net just a few years back and how great it was going to be for the internet..................so when we going to see some results guys??? In terms of Microsoft Type Application Development maybe its good for those who don't know any better but as far as the Web Goes.......................... you'd design better apps on a typewriter and a scanned copy would most likely run better as a web app than anything microsoft can dish up!!!!!

This horrible joke of a web page is just further evidence of how seriously Mico$oft have lost their way and now they're trying to find new ways to extort money from us with their product validation for download schemes............... Downloading microsoft software (as well as being pointless) has become a huge pain in the A** in any event!!!!

Good luck Bill!!!!!

This is just another example of how Microsoft are
continuously losing out to other competitors.
Adobe and Corel are way ahead of M$
in the digital imaging and movie making
market. I took to using Netscape
and mozilla after my first taste of
IE 4 on my brand new home PC. Microsoft should
seriously consider asking for help
from Adobe and Macromedia (just 2 examples.) M$ are going to
need to come into the 21st Century
and bring out all new products not
just updates.

OS X, Win XP and FF2.

This almost exactly echoes my thoughts from a previous post to do with 'All things Microsoft' - I cannot claim I'm a fan of Corel or ever will be (That's too long to go into here.) But as for Adobe and Macromedia............ They've been around for a while and there' nothing on the market even now that even comes close...................

I am an owner also of probably one of the best priced pieces of graphics software in terms of total value for money and what the application can do in JASC Paint Shop Pro 7.0 (I had a trial of version 8 and hated it though!!!!). The Anniversary edition also shipped with Media Centre Pro and lots of cool add ons........... However it gets nothing like the use that Photoshop gets........ This is by far the best graphics program around for PC and I believe for Mac also. Similarly Dreamweaver is in a class of its own and gets better all the time (cant say much about the Macromedia website though - like FrontPage this is almost a complete waste of time!!!!!!). As for Illustrator - it's great if a little tricky to use, Freehand - top notch!!!!, Fireworks is good but still nothing close to as good a program as photoshop.................... and Flash is still one of the best revolutionary technologies around though sadly has been abused by the lowlifes who have no other purpose in life than to make it a misery for everyone else - namely writers of Spam, Spyware, adware and malware) I wish someone would exterminate such vermin!!!!!

Aside from those mentioned I'm not much of a fan of the rest of what Adobe has on offer save maybe In Design. I tried out Go Live and well.....another waste of space!!!! No editor does it quite like Dreamweaver!!!!. And all I have to say about director is - I wish I had enough time on my hands and knew where to start!!!!

Cheers P.L. good comments and very much along my way of thinking........ I have always had to use the dreadful Internet Explorer as so many of the unwitting out there still know no better, so I have to get an idea at least of what they're seeing when I design a site......... Needless to say it's the least used of all my browsers right now and if I could afford to take it off my system - I would. I hate microsoft so much that all I have to say on the matter is................. as soon as I have the bucks I'. going to buy me a shiny nice piece of fruit instead!!!!!!
