How to get mail without IM, NS7

Postby ronm » Fri 21 Oct, 2005 8:54 am

I am just installing Netscape 7.1 from a CD on a system I am rebuilding. I don't want IM on the machine if it is at all possible, but do want the mail feature.

One of the options on the custom install is mail and IM. Is there anyway to get one without the other?

You can install Netscape 7 with mail and without AIM, but you won't be able to access @netscape.net mail accounts. Also, Netscape 7.1 is getting outdated, so you might want to try either Netscape 7.2 (which is also outdated, but not as much), or Mozilla 1.7.12 (which is very similar to Netscape, is not outdated, and has no IM to begin with)

You do not have to set up IM. I never did, and I was perfectly happy.
Mozilla has IRC Chat. You can get NS7.1 Streamline which has an optional IM.
NS7.1 is, no doubt outdated and worse, but I don't think that there has been any big effort to have an IM-free program. I never paid attention to Mozilla, if the installation of IRC is optional or not.

Thanks for the response. Went to the link you provided for the streamline 7.1 which looked like what I wanted. But then a saw a note warning me away from it since it is going on a WIN98SE machine (memory leak problem). So this brings up a couple other questions.

1: Given this Is a WIN98 SE system which version of NS is the best solution, should I go for 7.1, 7.2 7.02, or some other version?

2: Is it possible to just get the mail and newsgroup function of Netscape without IM and the browser part?

If you don't even want the browser part, then you probably don't want a suite at all. Have you tried looking into Mozilla Thunderbird, a stand-alone mail and newsgroups client based on Netscape Mail's code?

I lived with NS7.1, but I was happy to be anything else. It is not a problem with WinXP. I would go for the Thunderbird option, any time, but who knows what other people want!

Oh, and by the way... Chatzilla is of course an optional component.
