How to upgrade

Postby goosey » Wed 07 Jul, 2004 7:09 am

Based on what I've read hear on some other posts, it looks like Netscape 7.2 is right around the corner. Yeh! Should I uninstall 7.1 before upgrading? Will this affect our profiles? (We're a netscape family.) I thought it would be god to have this info beforehand.

Sorry for all the spelling and grammar errors. I got excited and was in a hurry.

Yes, it would be best to uninstall Netscape 7.1 before installing 7.2, especially as 7.1
is now just over a year old. There have been quite a number of changes, bugfixes
and improvements to the underlying Mozilla codebase since then, so installing
the new version directly over the old version, could cause big problems.

(Netscape 7.1 was based upon Mozilla 1.4. Netscape 7.2 is based upon Mozilla 1.7.)

Your profiles will not be affected when you uninstall Netscape 7.1, as these are stored
in a different folder location on your HDD from where you have Netscape 7.x installed.
I notice you're using Windows XP, so you should find your Netscape 7.x profile at . .

C:\Documents and Settings\your-windows-logon-name\Application Data\Mozilla

This assumes that you have just one partition (your C:\ drive) on your HDD

If you decide to install Mozilla, ensure you setup a seperate user profile, as sharing
profiles between installations of Netscape and Mozilla can cause various problems.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Or, if you look for trouble, like I do, as I want to compare everything, do the following: 1.Install 7.2 in a different folder. You will have to do the selection when the installation first start, and you are shown a path.
2. Create a new profile, into which you will paste the most important files.
