Hurricane Rita hit where I live yesterday, Thurs. Sept.29th

Postby Lorraine » Fri 30 Sep, 2005 10:31 pm

Hi:
Just thought I would let you know that we had very high winds, and rain yesterday from the remains of Rita

Around 7:30AM Rita woke me up with a thunderstorm.
Then it just rained for awhile and I stayed in bed and fell asleep again.

When I got up it was still raining, and there was wind, but around 11:00AM the winds were quite bad.
I was speaking on the phone when there was a loud bang on the roof so it seemed, Maggiemae, my little terror of a dog, started to bark and with the bang and her barking, it frightened me for a moment. But I looked outside and I couldn't see much but leaves and branches flying around.

It got worse, stronger winds later. Finally when it all subsided and I looked out, I noticed that I had a tree down in the garden. That was the bang I heard, it hit my
eavestrough and guttertoppers, but I don't think it did any damage. Will have someone check it next week. I had branches all over the yard, the tree was lying on the fence, it didn't break the fence as it hit the house first.

It took my clothesline down too.
Today I picked up branches and I guess I will get my hubby's chainsaw tuned up as it is nearly new.
I think I will keep the wood as it is Mountain Ash and is a good wood burning wood. I might need it in the winter if the oil gets too expensive. I have a few trees that are very tall, like maybe 70 ft. So I think I will have two that are close to my house chopped down.

Anyway, a lot of people were without electricity, including my two daughters who live in different towns about a 20 min drive from each other.

The youngest came to eat at my place and brought her frozen stuff from her freezer, but about 2 hrs. after arriving her power was on. They told her not until 4:00AM. I have all her raspberries in containers now. lol
They would make good raspberry jam.
She picked them from her garden. About 10 containers.

That's all I have to say, it's just that Rita sure travelled far to knock down my tree.

It hit here yesterday around 3:30 PM (EDST) when I got out of school. I am guessing, though, that it started earlier, because the campus's power, all save for the emergency lights on the generator, got knocked out around 2PM.

When I got outside, I was amazed by the downpour of water, so I stayed inside until my ride home came. Ironically three other people decided to run through the rain to a nearby 7-Eleven and pick up a few bottles of Mountain Dew and other junk; since there was a power outage the vending machines in the building weren't working. They were completely soaked in water, but they say it was well worth it.

More tree limbs down at my house. Particularly large limbs have been falling from the tree in front of the house, thankfully not in the direction of the house, but into the street, and the added wind wasn't helpful. I found the missing trash bin of ours down the street; the wind was so powerful it managed to drag the bin up a hill.

Thank you James, now I have to get someone to get rid of the tree. I cut the branches and picked up a lot of the branches, I tied them in bundles for the garbage on Monday.

I'm exhausted now, but thought I would just check a bit on the PC and then have a nap, maybe for the night.

I've been working all day outside. I'm getting too old for this kind of work. I will call a Tree Company that crushes all the remains of the trees that they cut. I can't carry that stuff out and it's too darn hard to find people to work.

My husband used to cut peoples trees down for nothing.
He was happy to help them out and he was an expert tree cutter. Not professionally, but he worked in the bush when he was younger and learned how to fell trees.
All our neighbours would ask him to cut their trees when necessary.

And of course he had lots of practice at the lake in the summer. Oodles of trees ready to fell each year. Some very dangerous. He could tell you where the tree would fall before he put the chainsaw near it.

I'm taking it from your words that you're on your own, Lorraine. I would have hoped that one of the many that your husband helped in the past would be willing to lend a hand to assist you now. Anyway, I think your course of action is best: get a tree company to come in and do the hard work now. Don't hurt yourself. And good for Maggiemae! She's ever on the spot and vigilant! Yahoo! God bless our little furry friends. :)

Isn't that the truth! What happened to the handyman that was always around, at least when I was younger? It costs an arm and a leg to have a tree cut down, and the debris carried away.

James and all:
I replied the other night and when I went to send it, my ISP had cut me off... I called them the next day and he wanted to send a technician and I told him it had worked earlier and there was nothing wrong. He had me unplug 3 plugs on my modem, replug, and then it worked. It's always a problem on Sunday. Yes, I live alone James and thanks for your thoughts.

Ramona and all:
It sure is hard to find a handyman.
They all think they are Neurosurgeons today.
Just because they use a drill and saw. :)

I phoned a tree company earlier and the fellow said something in french, it was the right number, I asked if he spoke english and he hung up.
I redialed and it was disabled. I guess they are busy now after the storm. I can leave it until the spring anyway, it'll get covered in snow soon, it doesn't bother me.

I asked my neighbour if he wanted the tree, he said "NO" and then about 2 hrs. later he arrived home with a trailer full of wood.
He asked me a few years ago if he could cut a maple tree down, it blocked his view, I let him. Less leaves for me to pick up.

He didn't offer to cut the one that is down tho!

I know it will cost me a fortune to get it cut.

My goodness, my hubby should have been a rich man with all the trees he cut for people.

Oh well, perhaps I should get the chainsaw tuned up and cut it up for firewood myself. I might need it with the price of oil. But if I sell the house, the people would have more wood and they can chop it. lol

All day yesterday, going into the first half of today, the rain we received was from the tropical storm that reached the southeast coast of the U.S. earlier last week.

Now, we're expected to get rain every day through next Saturday (Oct. 15). Not sure where this rain is coming from...

We have also had oodles of rain, it's been so cold too.
Last Thursday it was 80F at 6:00PM. Then the temperature just plummetted. Oh my, it's been cold and damp ever since. Well, it's around 40-50F but when it drops 40 degrees all of a sudden, you sure feel it after the weather we have been having, which was so nice and warm. Supposed to rain into the middle of the week....It's gloomy today and looks like rain.
The heat is on and I burn oil. I'll be in the poorhouse in the spring :)
