I want my Trash container back......

Postby jimsuch » Thu 17 May, 2007 8:04 pm

On Win Xp Home with Netscape 7.1 mail. I deleted a users "Trash" container of three years of emails, now I find out the ID10t was storing his active emails there.

In Explorer, the "Mail" folder shows the "trash" file as still being about 800,000 KB, which was the original size before it was emptied, even thou within the Mail program the "Trash" folder is empty.

Can this be fixed before I have to take my frustration out on this guy!!!

Tnx

Jim

if explorer shows 800000kb....

Immediatly backup the trash folder thru file manager to a safe location.....

Open the "trash folder" with a plain text editor and verify that it has entries.....

post back with results

I see that captjlddavis, the expert on these matters, has you in hand. Follow his instructions. My note below was being written while he actually replied.

[Information in my post below may have factual errors. See captjlddavis' post below mine.]
It is important that you differentiate between actual file deletion (using the operating system) and the action of using the "empty trash" command within Netscape's mail program. Using the "empty trash" command only changes certain header codes, but does not actually delete the actual E-mails. Using the "compact this folder" command inside Netscape's mail program will delete or likewise make the mail unrecoverable.

See the information at:

Restore Netscape or Mozilla Deleted Mail •• Only Under Specific Conditions

which is the best that I have seen on the topic of recovering "deleted" mail, although it may not be a convenient process for the large amount in your specific situation.

Thanks for the kind words profman -
Just a minor correction:

If trash is emptied thru the mail program -

e.g "empty trash" - all is gone from the trash folder....
I believe that what actually happens with the "trash folder" within the program is that the folder is actually replaced with an EMPTY trash folder.....

When you 'delete' from any folder , the Moz status is changed.....within the original folder.

let's wait and see what the OP has

...but the deleted mail is not removed from Inbox, where it should in the background, and recoverable, unless the Inbox is compacted.
If you look in Explorer, the size of the Inbox will be unchanged, even if all messages are deleted. Only compacting take care of that. Also, any manipulation in Explorer must be done with the program closed.
