iBook reading at snail pace

Postby buzzeditor » Thu 02 Sep, 2004 3:31 am

My girlfriend's got a brand new iBook and I've set it up with two different ISP on a pay-as-you-go providers (UK2.net and UKU), and both times the transfer rate barely tops 33,000bps.
The iBook has a built in 56k modem but it runs incredibly slow. My G4 with its 56k modem runs so much quicker online.
Has anyone any tips on how to make it run a little quicker other than going for broadband?

The operating system and the amount of ram, and of course, which browser your girlfriend's using.

The spec of your girlfriend's iBook?

The iBook is 800mhz, 128mb ram, running OSX, browser is MS Internet Explorer.
The thing is, it never connects faster than 34,000bps - surely with a 56k modem it should be much higher. My G4 connects at 48,000.
I'm wondering if I've selected the wrong modem type or there's a better ISP.
Any ideas?

Check her ISP's homepage if they provide 56k (V.90) connection,

otherwise, from System Preferences | Network | Internal Modem

There's a drop-down menu, and check the setting for that.

Even worse today

How do you do screengrabs on a Mac? I've forgotten. I could show you my bps rate, it's now down to 19,000 - so slow.
All my settings are as above and I'm using Exploer 5.2.
There must be something not in sync...

To do screengrabs on Mac OS X, you'll need to use the feature known simply as Grab.
No need to download it from any websites, as it comes with Mac OS X as standard.

The Grab program saves all screengrab images as TIFF files, so you'll need to open
your screengrabs in a suitable graphics manipulation app, and save as PNG or JPG.

On another subject, you might want to consider upgrading your internet browser.
Microsoft discontinued IE for Mac last year, so there'll be no further updates for
it beyond v5.2.3. I'd recommend using either Mozilla, Netscape or Safari as the
primary browser on your Mac, and put IE to one side as a seconary browser,
to be used when you visit a site that foolishly blocks all non-IE browsers.

Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Capturing a screen in OS X

Postby Antony » Thu 02 Sep, 2004 9:00 pm

taking a screenshot in OS X

I've never know how to use the Grab feature.

It is listed under the Application menu [tt]Services[/tt] | [tt]Grab[/tt], but always greyed out.

The built-in feature is...
  • To capture the entire screen, press :cmd: + [tt]Shift[/tt] + [tt]3[/tt].
  • To capture part of a screen, press :cmd: + [tt]Shift[/tt] + [tt]4[/tt].
it would save to a PDF file in the desktop.

If you want to save the screenshot to clipboard,
  • To capture the entire screen, press :cmd: + [tt]Shift[/tt] + [tt]3[/tt], then press [tt]space bar[/tt].
  • To capture part of a screen, press :cmd: + [tt]Shift[/tt] + [tt]4[/tt], then press [tt]space bar[/tt].

Or if you like me, making lots of screenshots, I recommend a programme, Snapz Pro X. (shareware)

Where can I get a copy of Mozilla or Safari for the Mac?
Can I get a free copy of this browser online?

Download links . . .

Netscape 7.2 for Mac OS X
Mozilla 1.7.2 for Mac OS X

Camino 0.8.1 for Mac OS X

Mmm, interesting...

The iBook is running on 10.2.1 OSX but which is the best browser to download considering that my connection is painfully slow?
I'm still only connecting at 30k when I have a 56k modem, will this improve with a new browser?
Would more RAM help?
Thanks.

 Update to OS X 10.2.8 for free with the Software Update program inside the OS. You may as well download any other updates that are there as well (Security, for iTunes, QuickTime etc)

 More ram always helps. 800mhz G4 is a plenty fast enough processor, but 128 mb of ram would slow it down quite a bit - go for at least 512mb.

 I think the connection problem may be fixed with a new browser or updating to 10.2.8, but it could be a phone line problem too.

Bring your iBook to your friend's place where ADSL or Cable is available, my suggestion :-)

Have you checked your setup/configuration?

If it's small, Opera, Safari, Firefox or Camino is your best bet

On the way...

Postby buzzeditor » Wed 08 Sep, 2004 4:00 am

Right, that sounds cool - I'll go the Apple.com and hopefully there I should find an update to 10.2.8.
Anthony, you mentioned setup/configuration, I've just typed in the ISP phone number nad password and hit connect.
Is there anything else I should set up?
