I don't know what are the required settings for your ISP, but, generally, you will find some clue in your Preferences|Advanced|Proxies.
I get my cable connection by "direct connection to the internet", although it may not be the only way. You should get word from your ISP for proper set up. Look at Proxies first. How did information about dialup got on the new computer? All information was in one place, initially, was it not.
Anyway, given time your identical profiles will not be identical, but access to mail should be.
