IE5 for Mac cancelled

Postby Shark Daddy » Fri 13 Jun, 2003 7:49 pm

It's finally official. Dang... what a good browser. Any thoughts? Will this really affect the Mac? It's a good thing Chimera and Safari can pick up where IE left off...

Tasman, its rendering engine still seems to be in development, so it's all good I suppose.

I don't know the complete story, but, as long as the program can handle the OS( rather than the other way around), IE should be usable. The way you put it, seems that the program will fall off. To many PC/Mac users, IE for Mac was superior to IE for PCs. And, where is Netscape going to be?
I have been using Win95 and then 98, in the past five years, and I am not moving. But, I wonder what a five year old OS can handle? If it was not for the incompatibilities, I would have moved to Macs long ago.

It seems to me that Microsoft seems to think the browser war is over. Which I suppose they're right. lol

Notice that now that they have that deal with AOL that IE 7 for Windows has been killed and now IE for the Mac is dead??

It just seems that now that Microsoft seems to believe there's no real competition left that they can just ignore the browser market. I know I heard people talk about it years ago at the height of the browser wars, that if IE won, Microsoft would bascially stop working on it, stop innovating. I believe we're seeing that now.

Personally, I think the only reason they've been putting so much work into Windows lately is because of Linux. Linux is a real threat to them.

But that's just Microsoft for you... no threats, no innovation... Once they crush threats, no more innovation.

Great business model eh?

This is one of the reasons why I decided to try out Linux.

For one, it's a Microsoft-free system: no IE, no bloat, just pure code. :)

Personally, I don't think the average computer user is going to want to upgrade their operating system, just to get a new version of the web browser.

There are alternative web browsers out there: Netscape (we hope!), Opera, Mozilla, and several others that are based on Mozilla.
